Women's Knit Cardigan

This sweater runs a bit large, Or oversize a bit.

These directions are for size 10. Changes for sizes 12, 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS any worsted weight (50 g balls) -- 18(19-19-20-20)

1 pair each Nos. 3 and 5 (3.25 mm and 3.75 mm) or any size needles that will give you your gauge.

7 buttons

GAUGE: 13 sts = 2 inches 7 rows = 1 inch

BACK:

Using smaller needles, cast on 114 (120-128-134-138) sts. K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 2 inches.

Change to larger needles and work even in stockinette st until piece measures 14 ( 14-14 ½ -14 ½ -14 ½ ) inches, ending with a wrong side Row.

SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLES:

At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3(4-5-5-5) sts.

Row 3: K 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, work in stockinette to last 4 sts, k 2 tog, k 2.

Row 4: K 1, p 2, work in stockinette to last 3 sts, p 2, k 1.

Repeat the last 2 rows 16 (17-17-17-19) times more, ending with Row 4

74 (76-82-88-88) sts.

Then work as follows:

Row 1: K 2, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, work to last 5 sts, k 3 tog, k 2.

Row 2: Repeat Row 4. Repeat these 2 rows 10 (10-11-12-12 ) times more. Sl remaining 30 (32-34-36-36) sts onto a holder.

LEFT FRONT

Using smaller needles, cast on 68 (70-74-78-82) sts.

K 1, p 1, ribbing for 2 inches

Change to larger needles and work to last 9 sts and put onto a holder to be worked later for frontband. Continue in stockinette on 59 (61-65-69-73) sts until piece measures 14 (14-14 ½ -14 ½ -14 ½ )inches, ending with a wrong side row.

SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLE:

At the beg of the next row bind off 3(4-5-5-5) sts, work to end of row.

Row 2: Work even.

Row 3: K 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, work to end of row.

Row 4: Work to last 3 sts, p 2, k 1.

Repeat the last 2 rows 16 (17-17-17-18) times, ending with row 4 -39 (39-42-46-49) sts.

Then work as follows:

Row 1: K 2, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, work to end of row.

Row 2: Repeat row 4. Repeat these 2 rows 4 (4-4-4-5) times more, ending at front edge -29 (29-32-36-37) sts.

SHAPE NECK:

Work 6 (6-6-8-9) sts and sl these sts onto a holder, work to end of row. Dec 1 st at neck edge EVERY row 4 (4-4-2-2) times, and then every other row 4 (4-5-7-7) times, and AT THE SAME TIME, continue to dec 2 sts at arm edge in same manner as before every other row 6 (67-8-8) times, ending at arm edge -- 3 sts.

On the next row sl 1, k 2 tog, psso. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONTBAND

Sl 9 sts from holder onto smaller needle and continue in double seed st until piece measures same length as front, stretching slightly. Sl 9 sts onto a holder.

RIGHT FRONT

Using smaller needles, cast on 68 (70-74-78-82) sts.

Rows 1 and 2: P 1, k 1, repeat from * across row.

Row 3: K 1, (p 1, k 1) 4 times, put a marker on needle, work in ribbing as established across Row.

Row 4: Work in ribbing as established to marker, (p 1, k 1) 4 times, p 1.

Row 5: BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 3 sts, bind off the next 3 sts, work to end of row. On the next row cast on 3 sts over those bound off previous row.

Continue in pattern as established until piece measures 2 inches. On the next row work to marker and sl these 9 sts onto a holder to be worked later for frontband; change to larger needles and work correspond to left front, reversing all shaping.

To dec for full-fashioned raglan armhole: Work to last 4 sts, k 2 tog, k 2. On the next row k 1, p 2, work to end of row.

RIGHT FRONTBAND: SL 9 sts from holder onto smaller needle, join yarn at inner edge and continue forming 6 more buttonholes, evenly spaced -- the last one to be made in neckband.

SLEEVES

Using smaller needles, cast on 44 sts.

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 2 inches, inc 8 sts evenly spaced on last row -- 52 sts.

Change to larger needles and work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1( ¾ , ¾ , ¾ , ½ ) inch 14 (16-18-19-21) times. Work even in pattern on 80 (84-88-90-94) sts until piece measures 17 ½ (17½ -18-18-18) inches, ending with a wrong side row.

SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN CAP

At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3 (4-5-5-5) sts.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 of back armhole shaping 23 (24-25-26-28) times -- 28 sts.

Then work as follows:

Row 1: K 2, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, work to last 5 sts, k 3 tog, k 2.

Row 2: Repeat row 4. Repeat these 2 rows 4 times more. Sl remaining 8 sts onto a holder.

FINISHING: Sew sleeves to back and front armholes. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew front bands in place.

NECKBAND: With right side facing you, using smaller needles, pick up and k 97 (101-103-107-109) sts around neck edge, including sts from holders.

Row 1: Work 9 sts in double seed st as established, p 1, * k 1, p 1, repeat from * to last 9 sts, work in double seed st to end of row.

Keeping 9 sts at each end of needle in double seed st, work remaining sts in ribbing as established, and AT THE SAME TIME, on the next row form another buttonhole in right front band in same manner as before.

Continue in pattern as established until neckband measures 1¼ inches.

Bind off loosely in ribbing. Finish buttonholes. Sew on buttons.
