 Warm Spring Jacket

These directions are for size 12. Changes for sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS

Worsted weight yarn (2 oz. skeins) – 17 (18-19-20)

1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 4 and 9

  GAUGE: 5 sts = 1 inch 6 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 4 sts.

Rows 1, 2, 5 and 6: * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 3: * K 1, P 1, K into front and into back of next st (2 sts made from 1 st), P 1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 4: * K 1, P 2 tog, K 1, P 1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 7: * K into front and into back on next st (2 sts made from 1 st), P 1, K 1, P 1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 8: * K 1, P 1, K 1, P 2 tog, repeat from * across Row. Repeat these 8 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK: Using No. 9 needles, cast on 88 (92-100-104) sts. Work even in pattern st until piece measures 18 (18 -18 ½-18 ½) inches.

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6 (7-7-8) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other Row 26 (27-28-29) times. Sl remaining 24 (24-30-30) sts onto a holder.

POCKET LINING: Make 2. Using No. 9 needles, cast on 22 sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 5 inches. Sl sts onto a holder.

LEFT FRONT: Using No. 9 needles, cast on 48 (52-56-60) sts. Work even in pattern st until piece measures 3 ½ inches.

POCKET BAND: Work 13 (15-17-19) sts in pattern st, put a marker on needle,

work next 22 sts in K 1, P 1 ribbing, put a marker on needle, work remaining 13 (15-17-19) sts in pattern st.

Keeping 22 sts between markers in K 1, P 1 ribbing, work even in pattern st on remaining sts until piece measures 5 ½ inches.

POCKET OPENING: On the next Row work 13 (15-17-19) sts, bind off the next 22 sts, work remaining 13 (15-17-19) sts.

INSERT POCKET: On the next Row work to pocket opening, work 22 sts of one pocket lining to same needle, work to end of Row. Work even on 48 (52-56-60) sts in pattern st until piece measures 18 (18-18 ½,18 ½) inches.

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off' 6 (7-7-8) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other Row 4 times. Put a marker in front edge to mark start of neck.

SHAPE NECK: Continuing to dec 1 st at arm edge every other Row 10 (12-14-16) times more, at neck edge dec 1 st every Row 4(6-8-10) times and EVERY ROW 12 (12-13-13) times. Keeping neck edge even, continue to dec 1 st at arm edge every other Row 12 (11-10-9) times more. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front reversing all shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures 2 inches.

BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 4 sts, bind off next 5 sts, work to end of Row. On the next Row cast on 5 sts over those bound off previous Row. Make 3 more buttonholes, evenly spaced -- the last one to be made 1 ½ inch below start of neck shaping.

SLEEVES: Using No. 4 needles, cast on 40 (44-44-48) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches.

Change to No. 9 needles and work in pattern st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1 inch 14 (14-16-15) times, forming new patterns as sts are increased. Work even in pattern st on 68 (72-76-78) sts until piece measures 18(18-18 ½,-18 ½) inches.

SHAPE RAGLAN CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6 (7-7-8) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other Row 26 (27-28-29) times. Bind off remaining 4 (4-6-4) sts.

FINISHING: Sew sleeves to front and back armholes. Sew underarm and sleeve seams.

COLLAR: With right side facing you, pick up 144 (148-152-154) sts around neck from marker at right front neck to marker at left front neck including sts from holders. K 1, P 1 in ribbing, dec 1 st each end of needle EVERY ROW until collar measures 6 inches at center back.

Bind off.

Sew pocket linings in place. Steam.
