Abbreviations

Exchanging knit to crochet

Childs knit swearter = Tennis Classic    

Instructions are for size 4. Change for sizes 6 and 8 are in ( ).  

 Materials; Bulky weight yarn, (2 oz. skein), 7(8 - 8) Natural (A), 1 each Navy (B), Red (C) and Denim (D). 

Size 10 knitting needles or size for gauge; four ¾ buttons. 

Gauge: 7 sts = 2", 5 rows = 1"

Finished chest measurements (buttoned): 24½ (26¾ - 28)". 

Back: With A, cast on 42 (46-481 sts. Beg'g with a wrong-side Row, in garter st (k each Row), work 3 rows A, 2 rows B. 2 rows C, 2  rows D. With A, work in st st (k 1 Row, p 1 Row) until piece measures 9 (10 - 11)" or desired length to underarm, end with p Row. 

Shape Armholes; Cont'g in st st. bind off 2 sts beg next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end every 2 nd Row twice. Work even on 34 (38 - 40) sts until armholes measure 5 (5½ - 5 ¾)", end with p Row.

Shape Shoulders: Bind off 5 (6-6) sts beg next 4 rows; bind off 14 (14 - 16) sts. 

Left Front: With A, cast on 24 (26 - 27) sts. Work 3 rows garter st. 

Next Row: With B, k to last 3 sts. join A. k 3 A (front edge). Keeping 3 sts in A at front edge, work garter st stripes of 1 more Row B, 2 C, 2 D, then cont in st st with A, keeping 3 sts in garter st at front edge. 

When piece measures same as Back to underarm, 

Shape Armhole: Bind off 2 sts at side edge once, then dec 1 st every 2nd Row twice Work even on 20 (22-23) sts until armhole measures 2 (2½ - 2¾)", end at front edge. 

Shape Neck: Working all sts in st st, bind off 3 sts at front edge once. 2 sts twice, then 1 st every 2nd Row 3 (3 - 4) times. Work even on 10 (12-12) sts until armhole measures same as Back to shoulder. 

Shape Shoulder: Bind off 5 (6-8) sts at side edge twice. 

Right Front: Mark Left Front for 4 buttons evenly spaced as shown. Work Right Front to correspond to Left Front reversing shaping and working buttonholes opposite markers as follows: From front edge, k 1, yo, k 2 tog. Reinforce buttonholes afterwards if desired

Sleeves: With A, cast on 26 (26-29) sts. Work border as for Back, then work in st st with A, inc'g 1 st each end on next row then every inch 5 times in all.

Work even on 36 (36 - 39) sts until piece measures 6 (7 - 8)", end with p Row.

Work 2 rows garter st with B. 

Check Pattern; 

Rows 1 and 3: * K 3 A, 3 C, rep from * across, end k 0 (0 - 3) A.

Row 2: P 0 (0-3) A, * 3 C, 3 A; rep from * across. 

Rows 4 and 6: * K 3 D, 3 A; rep from * across, end 0 (0-3) D. 

Row 5: P O (0 - 3) D, 3 A, 3 D, Rep from * across. With C, work 2 rows garter st.

Repeat Check Pat, working 3 rows with D and A, 3 rows with B and A as shown.

Work 2 rows garter st with D.

With A, work in st st until piece measures 10½ (11½ - 12½)" or desired length to underarm,

end with p Row. 

Shape Cap: Bind off 2 sts beg next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end every k row 10 times. Bind off 12 (12-15) sts. 

Pocket: (Make 2): With A, cast on 12 sts.

Work 10 rows st st, then k 2 rows each B, C, D and A. Bind off. 

Finishing: Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. 

Collar: From right side with A, pick up sts around neck, keeping work flat and excluding front garter st borders.

Keeping 3 sts each end in garter st, work in st st for 1", end with p row. 

Next Row: K 3, inc 1 st, k to last 4 sts, inc 1 st, k to end. Rep Inc row every k row 3 times more. Work even until collar measures 2¾", k 2 rows each B, C, D and A, keeping 3 sts A at each end. Bind off. Sew on pockets.
