Aran Tam and Mittens   Exchange to crochet

A tam with matching mittens is the fashionable thing on college campuses across the country, but also looks great around town.  Knit several sets for relatives, friends and of course, don't forget a set for yourself.

Knit of Worsted Weight yarn, you will need one skein for the hat and one for the mittens.  The tam is worked on numbers 5 and 8 standard knitting needles; the mittens on number 5 standard needles and number 5 double pointed needles (used only for the thumb).  Both use a cable holder; the mittens also need 2 stitch holders.  Because of the difficulty of checking gauge on an Aran knit, the gauge is given only for the mittens.  If the gauge is correct for size 5 needles for the mittens, it should be correct for the patterned tam.
