TWEEDY TAILORED SWEATER

 SIZES:  (8-10) [(12-14) (16-l8)].

Sweater measures 16½" [18½-20½] across bust and about 27½" [28½"-29½"] from back of neck to lower edge.

NOTE: Work with 4 strands yarn held together throughout, using one strand of each color.

 MATERIALS: 20 (25-30) skeins of sport weight yarn. Shown with colors autumn, tan, turquoise mist, rust, rosy pink.

 Knitting needles, 1 pair US Number 13 (or English needles No. 00) or the size that will give you the correct gauge.

 GAUGE: In stockinette st, 5 sts- 2".

BACK: Starting at lower edge, cast on 49 [54 - 59] sts Work in garter st (k each Row) for 4 rows- Change to stockinette st (p 1 Row, k 1 Row) and work unti piece measures 3' from beg. Dec 1 stat beg and end of next Row, then continue in stockinette st and repeat dec Row every 3" 3 times more. Work even on 41 [46 - 51] sts until piece measures 20½ "  [21 - 21 ½"] from beg.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 2 (3 - 3) sts at beg of next 2 rows- Dec 1 st at beg and end of every other Row 2 ( 2 - 3) times. Work even on 33 [36 - 39] sts until armholes measure 7 [7½ "-8"]

 To Shape Shoulders: Bind oft 8 (9 -10] sts at beg of next 2 rows. Place remain'ng 17 [18 - 19] sts on holder for collar.

 LEFT FRONT: Starting at lower edge, cast on 30 [32 - 35] sts,

Work 4 rows in garter st-

Next Row (front edge): K 6 for border, p across.

Following Row: K across-

Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures 3" from beg, ending at side edge, Dec 1 st at beg of next row, then repeat dec at same edge every 3" 3 times more.

Work even in pattern as established on 26 [28 - 31] sts until piece measures 14½' [15" - 15"] from beg, ending at front edge.

 Garter Stitch Block Pattern:

 1st Row: K 6 border sts, p 4, k 7, p remaining sts.

2nd Row: K across.

Repeat last 2 rows 5 times more (these 12 rows complete first block) * Keeping first 6 sts at front edge in garter st,

work 10 rows even in stockinette st,

then repeat 12 rows of garter st block pattern.

Repeat from * once more and at same time, when piece measures same as back to underarm, begin armhole shaping as follows:

At armhole edge, bind off 2 [3 - 3) sts at beg ot nextrRow, then dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row 2 [2-3] times.

After third block is completed, continue in stockinette st and keeping front border as established, work even on 22 [23 - 25] sts, if necessary, until arm hole measures same as back armhole, ending at arm edge.

 To Shape Shoulder: Bind oft 8 (9 - 10] sts at beg of next Row, work to end of Row. Place re­maining 14 [14 - 15] sts on holder for collar

 RIGHT FRONT: Work as for left front. Reversing shaping.

 COLLAR:        Sew shoulder seams. Place all sts from holders onto needle. Attach yarn at right front neck edge Work even in garter st on 45 [46 -49] sts for 2½". Bind off.

 SLEEVES:     Starting at lower edge, cast on 34 [35 - 36] sts. Work 16 rows in garter st. then change to stockinette st and work even until piece measures 17" from beg or desired length to underarm.

 To Shape Cap: Bind oft 2 [3 - 3] sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st at beg of next 10 [12 - 14] rows. Bind off2 sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind oft remaining 12 [9 - 8) sts.

 POCKETS (make 2): Cast on 14 sts. Work in garter st for 5" Bind off.

  FINISHING: Sew side and sleeve seams Sew in sleeves Sew pockets in place.
