Soft Flower Square

This is a little more difficult (at first), but lovely square for making Linus Blankets, an afghan for a friend, perhaps even a cape or shawl for a little girl. I made an afghan for my Aunt Maggie using this pattern, one I adapted from an old original, and once you get the knack of it, you can whip off those squares in no time at all!

Each square is approximately 5 ¼ " and for an afghan you will need about 10 across and 12 down = 120 squares

Materials:

Size H crochet hook, I used Carron 'Simply Soft" worsted weight yarn-- 6 oz skeins. 6 skeins white, 2 skeins each of light blue, light pink, light yellow, and light green (I had some let over yarn, but I never mind that, as I make mittens and baby hats from it.) In this patternern you will make clusters of flowers.

CLUSTERS:

Beginning cluster:

Ch 3 (counts as dc), holding last loop of each stitch on the hook, work 3 dc in the specified space, yarn over, then pull through all 4 loops on hook.

SQUARE:

(On right side of square) Ch 6, sl st to 1st ch to close the ring. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 3 dc in the ring and turn - 4 dc made.

Row 2 of the first petal (this is the wrong side of the petal): Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st across, ch 4; turn, carrying the last ch 4 made- across the wrong side of square.

PETALS 2- 8:

ROW 1 (on the right side again) Work 4 dc in the ring; turn

Row 2: Rep Row 2 of first petal.

After 8 petals are complete, join last ch-4 with a sl st to top of beg ch-3 of First Petal. (8 ch-4 loops made) Fasten off.

RND 2 : Make sure the right side of the square is facing you.

Join Green with a sl st in a of the ch-4 loops, (Beg cluster, ch 5, cl) in same space, ch 3, sc in next ch-4 lp, ch 3, *(cl, ch 5, cl) in next ch-4 lp, ch 3, sc in next ch 4 lp, ch 3; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in the top of beg cluster - 8 cls made. Fasten off.

RND 3 : With the right side facing join white in any ch-5 lp, [ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in same lp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-3 space, ch 1) twice; * (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-5 lp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1) twice; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3; turn - 48 dc made.

RND 4 (Wrong side of square): Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) twice; *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, ch 1 **, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 3 times; repeat from * around, ending last rep at **; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 turn -- 60 dc made.

RND 5 (Right Side) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc around entire square, making 3 sc in each corner space. Join with sl st in beginning sc. Fasten off.

Finishing: Lay squares out in any patternern you wish. Sew together (using whip stitch) in Rows of 10 squares across and 12 squares down.

After the afghan is put together, you can sc around entire afghan to make it all even around.

Other Ideas

Very nice and simple sampler squares can be made by doing any stitch back and forth in Rows.Even a square made of dc or sc is very nice.

To save yourself time and frustration, I recommend measuring your work at the end of

the first Row. If it doesn't measure approx. 6 ½ inches, start again using a larger/smaller hook, or modifying the starting number of chains.

That way, when your square measures 6 ½ both ways, you can finish the square off with a Row of sc all the way around. This gives the square a nice finished look, and it will measure about 7 inches.

Crochet Stripes

Note: If you alternate colors every other Row, you don't have to cut the yarn at the end of the Row. Instead carry the yarn along the side of your work, and pick it up when you need it. Just remember not to pull it too tightly along the edge.
