Granny Square Scarf

Extra granny squares?  Here is a use for them, makes a nice gift.  Thank you  SCBasco@aol.com   

SIZE: 56 x 11" (56 x 22")

MATERIALS:  (3) balls (A), 1 (2) balls (B) 1 balls (C) or 3 oz. colors of your choice.

Crochet hook size H OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

GAUGE: 1 square = 5 ½" x 5 ½". TO INSURE PROPER SIZE, BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

Note:  If gauge varies considerably or wider edging is desired, additional yarn will be required.

BASIC SQUARE: Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a loop.

 

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in loop, (ch 3, 3 dc in loop) 3 times, end ch 3, sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: Attach yarn with sl st to ch-3 space, ch 3 (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 space, *ch 1, (3 dc,ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space; rep from * two more times, end ch 1, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: Attach yarn with sl st to ch-3 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 space, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space; rep from * two more times, ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 space, ch 1, join with sl st to 3rd ch of first ch 3. Fasten off.

Rnd 4: Join yarn with sl st to ch-3 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 space, *(ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space) twice, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space; rep from * two more times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space) twice, ch 1, join with sl st to 3rd ch of first ch 3. Fasten off.

SQUARE 1 (make 10 for scarf;20 for shawl): Foll instructions for Basic Square, work colors as follows:

Rnd 1: Color A. Rnd 2: Color B.

Rnd 3: Color A. Rnd 4: Color C.

SQUARE 2 (make 10 for scarf; 20 for shawl): Foll instructions for Basic Square, work colors as follows:

Rnd 1: Color C. Rnd 2: Color A.

Rnd 3: Color B. Rnd 4: Color A.

ASSEMBLY: Strips (make 1 of each for scarf; 2 of each for shawl): Sc tog 10 squares end to end to make a long, narrow strip in foll order:

Strip 1: 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2.

Strip 2: 2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1.

Place 2 strips next to each other to form scarf 10 squares long and 2 squares wide. Rep for shawl to have 10 squares long, 4 squares wide, alternating placement of strips. Sc or sew tog as desired. Trim outside edge with 1 Row sc in C, working 3 sc in each corner. Weave in ends.
