Exchanging knit to crochet

Scarf-Hood Cardigan  

            exchange to crochet    

                 

SIZES:        Misses small (medium-large). Garment width around underarms. closed about 35 ½" (39-41").

MATERIALS: Bulky weight yarn 5 (6-7) skeins. Natural White A, 2 skeins each Dark Brown (B). Medium Brown (C),  Light Brown (D). 

Knitting needles No. 10 ½ or size required to knit to gauge. 

7 metal buttons.

GAUGE:  3 sts and 4 rows 1".

NOTES:  Do not use bobbins for color changes; wind pattern colors into small balls. Change color on wrong side, lock strands by picking up new color from under dropped color, carrying color not in use loosely across back of work. Cut and join colors as needed. Run in yarn ends on wrong side.

Pocket Linings:

Make 2. With B, cast on 6 sts

Work in stockinette st (k on right side, p on wrong side) for 5". end wrong side. Sl sts on holder.

Body: 

With B. cast on 104 (112-120) sts.

Work in garter st (k each Row, for 14 rows- 7 ridges.

Change to C and continue in garter st for 14 rows-7 ridges.

Change to D and continue in garter  st  for 12 rows-6 ridges. 

Pocket Openings: 

With A k 7 (9-11) sts, * sl next 16 sts onto holder, holding k side of pocket lining against wrong side of jacket, k across 16 sts from one pocket  lining holder, * k 58 (62-66)  stsrepeal from * to *, k remaining 7 (9- 11) sts.

Continue in stockinette sts with A only for 6". 

Pattern: 

Following chart, work in stockinette st beg and end all sizes at right and left edge of chart. Work to top of chart working rows 7 and 8, 15 and 16, 23 and 24 in k to Form garter st ridges. 

Dividing Row (right side): K 21 (23-25) sts and sl to holder for right front, bind off next 8 sts or underarm. k 46 (50-54) sts beyond bound-off sts and sl to holder for back, bind off next 8 sts for underarm, k remaining sts and leave them on needle for left front.

Left Front: Working on these 21 (23-25) sts only continue with A in garter st, dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row twice-19 (21-23) sts.

Continue in garter st until 5" above dividing Row, ending at front edge.

Shape Neck: Bind off first 7 (8-9) sts, finish Row- 12 (13-4) sts. Continue in garter st until 7 " (7½" - 7½") above dividing Row.

Shape Shoulder: Bind off at armhole edge 5 st, twice, then 2 (3-4) sts once.

Right Front:  Sl 21(23-25) right front sts from holder to needle and work to correspond to left front, reversing shaping and pat.

Back: Sl 46 (50-54) back sts from holder to needle and continue with A in garter st, dec 1 st each edge every other row twice-42 (46-50) sts.

Continue in garter st until 7" (7 ¼ -7½") above dividing Row.

Shape Shoulders: Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 4 rows, then 2 (3-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 18 (20-22) sts.

Sleeves: With B. cast on 34 sts. Work in garter st for 14 rows-7 ridges.

Change to C and work in garter st for 14 rows-7 ridges.

Change to D and work in garter st for 12 rows-6 ridges.

Change to A and work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each edge every 4th row 3 (4-5) times-40 (42-44) sts.

Work even until 13" (13½- 14") from beg. 

Pattern: Following chart, work in stockinette st beg and end at S ((M-L).

Work to top of chart working rows 7 and 8, 15 and 16, 23 and 24, in k to form garter st ridges.

Top Shaping: Continuing with A in garter st bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows  32  (34-36) sts. Dec 1 st each edge every other Row 11 (12- 13) times. Bind off remaining 10 sts.

Finishing: Sew shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew pocket linings in place.

Neckband: From right side, with A starting at right front neck edge, pick up and k about 42 (44-46) sts along neck edge.

Work in garter st for 9 rows more-5 ridges. Bind off.

Hood and Scarf: With A, cast on 42 (44. 46) sts.

Work even in garter st for 4 rows.

Continue in gaffer st, dec 1 st each edge every other Row 14 (15-16) times- 14 sts. 

Next Row: With D, k 14 sts, then pick up and k 14 (15-16) sts along edge of hood piece, turn and k back across 28 (29-30) sts on needle, then pick up and k 14 (15-16) sts along other edge of hood piece 42 (44- 46) sts.

Cast on 78 sts for right end it scarf.

Turn and k back on 120 (122-124) sts, cast on 78 sts for left end of scarf- 178 (180 - 182) sts.

Continue in garter  st with C until 14 rows are completed.

Change to C and work in garter st for 14 rows.

Change to B and work in garter st or 14 rows

Bind off.

Sew hood and scarf section to neckband.

Fringes: Holding two 8" strands of B tog twist them. Insert through edge st of narrow end of scarf.

Fold in half and twist them tog in opposite direction tying them into a knot at end. Repeat fringe every 4th Row. Work other end the same.

Left Front Border: From right side. with A pick up and k about 76 (78-80) sts along front edge.

Work in garter st for 9 rows-5 ridges. Bind off.

Mark position of 7 buttons evenly spaced along left front edge, with the top one at neck edge and bottom one 3" from lower edge.

Right Front Border: Work to correspond to left front border for 4 rows. 

Buttonholes: *K to marker, bind off 2 st,  yo, repeat from * across all markers, k remaining sts; on next Row k, working 2 sts in each yo.

Continue in garter st for 3 rows more. Bind off. Sew on buttons.

Pocket Borders: Sl sts from pocket holder to No. 10½ needle, With A, work in garter st for 12 rows (6 ridges). Bind off. Tack each edge in place.
