Size 6 to 8 years Needles--American Standard Nos.3 and 5.

Material - Knitting Worsted 3 four ounce skeins Navy, ¼ ounce Red and White,

  9 Buttons.

Gauge--6 sts to 1 inch.

Size 8-- 4 more sts for back. 2 more sts for front. 2 more sts for sleeves.

Keep pattern same as size 6, having the extra sts on ends.

Pattern---Multiple of 7 sts plus 1.

Row 1--P 1, K 13, repeat across Row, ending P 1.

Row 2--K 1, P 13, repeat across Row, ending K l.

Row 3--K 1, P 1, *K 11, P 1, K 1, P 1, repeat from *across Row, ending P1, K 1.

Row 4---P 1, K l, *P 11, K l, P 1, K 1, repeat from *across Row, ending K1, P 1.

Row 5--K 2, P 1,*K 9, P 1, K 3, P 1, repeat from *across Row, ending P 1, K2.

Row 6--P 2, K 1, *P 9, K 1, P 3, K l, repeat from *across Row, ending K 1, P2.

Row 7--K 3, P 1,*K 7, P 1, K 5, P 1, repeat from *across Row, ending P 1, K3.

Row 8--P 3, K 1, *P 7, K 1, P 5, K 1, repeat from *across Row, ending K1, P3.

Rows 9 to 16, Knit 1 Row, P 1 Row for 8 rows.

Row 17--K 7, *P 1, K 13, repeat from *across Row, ending K 7.

Row 18--P 7, *K 1, P 13, repeat from *across Row, ending P 7.

Row 19--K 6, *P l, K 1, P 1, K 11, repeat from *across Row, ending K 6.

Row 20--P 6, *K 1, P 1, K 1, P 11, repeat from *across Row, ending P 6.

Row 21--K 5, *P 1, K3, P 1, K9, repeat from *across Row, ending K 5.

Row 22--P 5, *K 1, P 3, K 1, P 9, repeat from *across Row, ending with P5.

Row 23--K 4, *P 1, K 5, P 1, K 7, repeat from *across Row, ending K 4.

Row 24-- P 4, *K 1, P5, K 1, P 7, repeat froth *across Row, ending P 4.

Rows 25 to 32--Knit 1 Row, P 1 Row for 8 rows.

Back--With No. 3 needles, cast on 72 sts, K 2, P 2 for 1 ½ inches.

Change to No. 5 needles and dec 1 st on next Row (first Row of pattern).

Work in pattern until piece measures 9 inches from beg (9 ½ inches, size 8).

Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

K 2 sts tog at beg of next 6 rows.

Work even until piece measures 5 ½ inches (6 inches, size 8), measuring straight up from where 4 sts were bound off. Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 6 rows, bind off remaining 21 sts.

Left Front--With No. 3 needles, cast on 36 sts, K 2, P 2 for 1½ inches.

Change to No. 5 needles and work in pattern until piece measures 9 inches (9 ½ inches, size 8), from beg.

Bind off 4 sts at beg of next Row underarm.

K 2 sts tog at beg of every Row at underarm, 3 times. (29 sts).

Work even until piece measures 3 inches (3 ½ inches, size 8), measuring straight up from where 4 sts were bound off.

Now work over front to within last st at center front: P 1 st.

Next Row, K 1 st, work back in pattern.

Next Row, work to within 2 sts of center front, P 2.

Work back. Next Row, work to within 3 sts of center front, P 3.

Continue to work 1 more st in reverse stockinette at center front every other Row until there are 11 sts in reverse (lapel). The V pattern is continued to shoulder except in the lapel.

Bind off 6 sts at beg of every Row at shoulder edge, 3 times.

Slip remaining 11 sts on st holder.

Work right front to correspond.

Collar--Sew shoulders tog, turn back lapel of left front and join yarn at outer edge of lapel. K across 11 sts left on st holder, pick up 21 sts across back of neck, turn back right lapel and K across 11 sts, starting at inner edge of lapel P 1 Row, K 1 Row on 43 sts, for 3 inches, bind off.

Sleeve--With No. 3 needles, cast on 40 sts, K 2, P 2 for 2½ inches.

Change to No. 5 needles and start pattern, increasing 3 sts on first Row of pattern.

Work ½ inch even, now inc 1 st at each end every inch until piece measures 11 inches from beg (61 sts).

Work 1 inch even, or desired length to underarm.

Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

K 2 sts tog at beg and end of every 3rd Row, 8 times.

K 2 sts tog at beg and end of every other Row, 2 times.

K 2 sts tog at beg and end of every Row, 6 times, binding off remaining 21 sts.

Finishing--With Navy, work 1 Row of s c around fronts and collar, increasing 2 sts at comers), on right side.

Work 2 rows with Red.

On first Row of White, sc in first 4 s c, *ch 2, skip 2 s c for buttonhole, work 7 sc in next 7 sts, repeat from * 5 times.

Work 1 more Row with white, 2 more rows with Navy.

Sew up side seams, sew up sleeve seams, insert into armhole.

SAILOR HAT

Crown-- With Navy ch 3, join, work 7 s c in ring, then work 2 s c in each st, until there are 24 sts around. Inc in every 5th st, until there are 45 sts around, then in every 20th st, until there are 100 sts around, inc in every 25th st until there are 138 sts around, join with a sl st, break thread.

With same color, ch 138 sts, to measure around the 138 sts around end of beret, join.

Work 1 Row of sc in each ch.

Next Row dec in every 25th st until you have 116 sts.

Now dec in every 10th st until there are 95 sts around or desired head-size, work even on 95 sts for 5 more rows, break thread. With white, ch 4, work 1 sc in each st, 3 s c. Ch 1, turn, work 3 s c in each Row, until you have 22 rows.

Ch 1, turn, inc 1 s c and work 22 rows with 4 s c. Inc 1 s c and work 50 rows with 5 s c. Now dec 1 st, work 22 rows with 4 s c. Dec 1 st, work 22 rows with 3 s c.

Finishing--Each piece must be blocked separately.

Sew white tog at ends. With Red Yarn, hold right side of top of beret toward you, hold white piece on wrong side of beret and work 1 Row of s e around in each st of beret and white piece, fasten off.

S c bottom of beret to white band in same manner, holding white piece toward you. Fasten off.

BOY'S SLIP-OVER

Back--Work same as girl's sweater to shoulders, then bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 4 rows, bind off remaining 23 sts.

Front--With No. 3 needles; cast on 80 sts. K 2, P 2 /or l ½ inches.

Change to No. 5 needles and dec 1 st on first Row of pattern.

Start first pattern Row, K 4, *P 1, K 13, repeat from *across Row ending P 1, K 4.

Keep in V pattern and work even until piece measures 9 inches from beg.

Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

K 2 sts tog at armhole edges every other row 4 times.

When ½ inch above where 6 sts were bound off, bind off 1 st at center front to start V neck. K 2 sts tog at neck edge every other Row 7 times, then every 4th Row, 5 times.

When piece measures 5½ inches from where 6 sts were bound off, bind off 5 sts at shoulder edge. Work back. Bind off 6 sts at beg of the next 2 rows.

Sleeves Work sleeve same as girls until piece measures 12 inches from beg, or desired length to underarm.

Bind off 4 st at beg of next 2 rows.

K 2 tog at beg and end of every 3rd row, 4 times.

K 2 sts tog at beg and end of every other row, 6 times.

K 2 sts tog at beg and end of every row, 6 times.

Bind off remaining 21 sts.

Neck Band With No. 3 needles, pick up 24 sts across back of neck. K 2, P 2 for ½ inch, bind off

. Pick up 82 sts around V in front, K 2, P 2 for ¾ inch, dec 2 sts at center of V on every Row, bind off.

BERET

With No. 5 needles, cast on 8 sts, P back.

Row 2--Inc in each st (16 sts), P back.

Row 4---* inc 1 st, K 1 st, repeat from *across Row (24 sts). P back.

Row 6---*Inc 1 st, K 2 sts, repeat from *across Row.

Continue in this manner, having 1 more st between each increase, until you have 16 sts between each increase.

K 1 Row,

P 1 Row without increasing.

Now decrease in same manner as you increased. * K 2 sts tog, K 16, K 2 tog, repeat from *across Row, P back.

Decrease in this manner having 1 st less between each decrease for 5 more K rows.

K 1 Row on purled side (hem), then K 1 Row, P 1 Row for inch, bind off loosely.

Turn back inch hem and sew or K 1, P 1 for 5 rows, bind off K 1, P 1. Block flat.
