Exchanging knit to crochet

Exchange knitting to crochet or crochet to knitting.

Poncho Spanish Style   

Exchange to crochet  

Add a touch of Mexico with this  easy-to-knit design.   One size fits  teen-agers     and  adults.

Materials;  8 two-ounce skeins thick  and thin yarn, a number 6 crochet hook and one pair size 13 knitting  needles or size required to knit to gauge.


k (knit)           tog (together)

p (purl)          sl (slip)

st (stitch)        Sc (single crochet)

psso (pass over slipped stitch)

Gauge: 5 sts equal 2 inches

7 rows equal 2 inches

First Half: For lower edge cast on 70 sts, slip marker on needle, cast on   another 70 sts (140 sts).

Pattern-Row 1 (Right Side): K 1, sI 1. k 1, psso, work k 1, p 1 to 3 sts before marker, k 2 tog, p 1, slip  marker, k 1, p 2 tog, work k 1, p 1  to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, p 1.

Row 2: K across.

Row 3: K 1, sI 1, k1, psso, work p 1, k 1 to 3 sts before marker, p 2 tog,  k 1, slip marker, p 1, k 2 tog, work p 1, k 1 to last 3 sts, p 2 tog, k 1.

Row 4: K across.

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern until 48 rows have been completed.

Bind off.

Second Half: Work same as first half.

Finishing: Weave shoulder seams. Work 1 Row sc around neck edge.

Cut remaining yarn into 6-inch pieces, using thick part of yarn only for fringe.  With right side facing and using crochet hook, pull cut ends of yarn up through every other st  around   lower edge and pass through loop to knot fringe. Poncho may be lined if desired.
