Exchanging knit to crochet

Exchange knitting to crochet or crochet to knitting.

Patterned sleeves and yoke are worked with just knit, purl, yarn over and purl 2 together.  This forms the interesting raised pattern. A little crocheting is used to finish the back neck opening which is closed with 4 small buttons.

Directions are for size 8 with changes in parentheses for sizes 10, 12 and 14.

Finished bust measurements are 33 (34, 36, 37) inches. 

You will need 6 (7, 8, 9) skeins of sport weight, 50 grain skeins (160 yards per skein).

Numbers 4 and 6 (or size required for gauge) standard knitting needles, size C crochet hook and four ½ inch buttons are also needed.

Gauge: 6 sts equal 1 inch in stockinette  8 rows equal 1 inch

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

Pattern Stitch: 

Row 1: (Right Side) P 5 (3, 1, 5), *k 1, yo, p 5, repeat from * across.

Rows 2 and 4: K 5 (3,1, 5), *p 2, k 5, repeat from * across.

Rows 3 and 5: P 5 (3,1, 5), *k 2, p 5, repeat from * across.

Row 6: K 5 (3, 1, 5), *p 2 tog, k 5, repeat from * across.

Row 7: P 2 (4, 3, 2), *k 1, yo, p 5, repeat from to end k 1, yo, p 2 (4, 3, 2).

Rows 8 and 10: K 2 (4, 3, 2), *p 2, k 5, repeat from to end p 2, k 2 (4, 3, 2).

Rows 9 and 11: P 2 (4, 3, 2), *k 2, p 5, repeat from to end k 2, p 2 (4, 3, 2).

Row 12: K 2 (4, 3, 2), *p 2 tog, k 5, repeat from to end p 2 tog, k 2 (4, 3, 2).

BACK: With smaller needles, cast on 98 (102,106, 110) sts.  K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 2 ½ inches, inc one St on last Row -99 (103, 107, 111) sts. 

Change to larger needles and work even in stockinette until piece measures 12 ½ (13, 13, 13 ½) inches or desired length to underarm, ending with p Row.

Armhole Shaping: At beginning of next 2 rows, bind off 14 sts - 71 (75, 79, 83) sts.

Rows 3 and 4: K.

Work even in pattern St for 24 rows.


Back Opening: Work 34 (36, 38, 40) sts, join another hall of yarn, k 2 tog, k 1, bind off these 2 sts, work to end of Row. 

Working on both sides at once, work even in pattern as established on 34 (36, 38, 40) sts of each side until a total of 54 (54, 60, 60) pattern rows have been worked. [Pattern has been worked 4 ½ (4 ½, 5, 5) times.]

P 1 Row.


Right Side: Bind off 18 (19, 20, 21) sts, k to end, place remaining 16 (17,18,19) sts on holder.

Left Side: K 34 (36, 38, 40 ) sts.

Next Row: Bind off 18 (19, 20, 21) sts, p to end, place remaining 16 (17, 18, 19) sts on holder.

FRONT: Work to correspond to back until armhole pattern has been completed 3 ½ (3 ½, 4, 4) times.

Neck Shaping: Work 21 (23, 24, 26) sts, sl center 29 (29, 31, 31) sts on holder, join another hall of yarn and work remaining 21 (23, 24, 26) sts. 

Working on both sides at once, dec one St at each neck edge every other row 3 (4, 4, 5) times.

Work even on 18 (19, 20, 21) sts of each side until armholes measure same as back, ending with p Row. 

Bind off remaining 18 (19, 20, 21) sts on each side.

SLEEVES: With smaller needles, cast on 50 (54, 56, 60) sts. 

Work k 1, p 1 for 1 ¼ inches, inc 39 (39, 41, 41) sts evenly in last Row of ribbing - 89 (93, 97, 101) sts.

P 1 Row (right side).

Change to larger needles and k 1 Row. 

In pattern St, work until pattern St has been completed 4 ½, (4 ½, 5, 5,) times -54 (54, 60, 60) rows. 

P 1 Row. 

Bind off in k.

Finishing: Sew shoulder seams. 

Set sleeve in.  Sew sleeve and side seams.

Neckband: With smaller needles and right side facing, pick up and k 79 (81, 85, 87) sts around neck edge, including sts from holders. 

K 5 rows. 

Bind off.
Back Opening: Right Edge: With right side facing, work 3 rows sc, fasten off.

Left Edge: Join yarn at bottom left edge, work 1 Row sc.

Buttonhole Row: Sc in each sc, except when forming buttonholes. 

Work 4 evenly spaced buttonholes by working 1 ch and skipping one St.

Next Row: Work SC in each St and each ch -sp, fasten off.

Overlap left side of neck opening over right side, sewing lower edges in place.  Sew on buttons.
