Abbreviations

Exchanging knit to crochet

Exchange knitting to crochet or crochet to knitting.

Nautical Pullover French Sailor and Beret 

 Exchange to crochet

Directions are for size 12-14 with any changes in parentheses for 16-18. Set takes 8 (10) ounces white, 2 ounces each of navy and red in 3-ply sport Yarn.

Use numbers 3 and 5 standard knitting needles or sizes needed for gauge and one set of size 4 double pointed needles.

Gauge: 6 sts equal 1 inch, 8 rows equal 1 inch

Pullover Back: Using Size 3 needles and white, cast on 99 (111) sts.

Row 1:  *K 1, P 1,  repeat from * across.

Row 2: * P 1, k 1, , repeat from * across, fasten off.

Repeating last 2 rows alternately for rib pattern, work stripes.

Rows 1 through 8: navy.

Rows 9 and  l0: white.

Rows 11 through 18: red.

Rows 19 and 20: white.

Rows 21 through 24: navy.

Rows 25 and 26: white. 

Rows 27 through 30: red. 

Rows 31 and 32: white. 

Rows 33 through 40:-navy, inc 9 sts evenly spaced across last Row.

Change to size 5 needles and white. Work stockinette st until entire piece measures ll ½ (13) or desired inches, end with p Row.

Shape Raglan Armhole: At beginning of each of next 2 rows bind off 8 10) sts.

 Row 3: K 2, k 2 tog, k to last 4 sts, sl 1 as if to k, sl 1 as if to p, slip both stitch back to left needle and knit tog, k2. 

Row 4: P each st.

Repeat last two rows 30 (32) times more. SL remaining 30 (34) sts onto a holder.

Front: Work to correspond to back until there are 46 (50) sts on needle, ending with a k Row.

Shape Neck: P 13, sl center 20 (24) sts, onto a holder, join another ball of yarn and p last 13 sts. Working on both Side at once, continue to dec 1 st at each arm edge in same manner as before every other Row 8 times more and AT SAME TIME, at each neck edge dec 1 st every other Row 3 times. SL remaining 2 sts of each Side onto a holder.

Sleeves: With size 3 needles and white, cast on 70 (78) sts. Work in rib pattern for 1 ½ inches, end right Side Row. 

P 1 Row, inc 4 sts evenly spaced across Row. 

Change to size 5 needles and work stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ½  inch until 82 (90) sts on needle. 

Work even until entire piece measures 4 ½  inches, end with a p Row. 

Shape Raglan Cap: At beginning of each of next 2 rows bind off 8 (10) sts.

Dec in same manner as on back. SL remaining 4 sts onto a holder. Finishing: Sew sleeves to back and front armholes. 

Sew underarm seams. 

Neckband: Using double pointed needles and white, with right Side facing, pick up 94 (102) sts around neck including sts from holders. 

K 1, p 1, ribbing loosely around for 7 rows. Fold in half and turn to inside of neck. Weave seam in place.

Finishing: Sew back seam neatly rib pattern for 1 Row. Work stripe pattern in established ribbing. 

Rows 1 and 2: navy. 

Row 3: white. 

Rows 4 and 5:-red.

Row 6: white. 

Rows 7 and  8: navy. 

Bind off loosely in ribbing. Steam press seams. 

BERET: Using size 5 needles and white, cast on 6 sts. 

Row 1 and All Odd Numbered Rows: P each st.

Row 2: K across, inc 1 st in every st- 12 sts.

Row 4: Same as Row 2-24 sts.

Row 6: Inc 1 st in first st, k 1, repeat from * to end-36 sts.

Row 8: Inc 1 st in first st, k 2, repeat from to * end-48 sts.

Row 10: * Inc 1 st in first st, k 3, repeat from * to end-60 sts. Continue to inc 12 sts every second Row twice, (having 1 st more between inches on every  inc Row), and then every 4th Row until there are 144 with p Row. 

First Dec Row: * K 2 tog, k 9, repeat from *, end k 8, k 2 tog. 

Next Row: P each st.

Second Dec Row: * K 2 tog, k 8, repeat from * across.

Next Row: P each st.

Third Dec Row: * K 2 tog, k 7, repeat from * across. 

Next Row: P each st. 

Change to size 3 needles and work in rib pattern for 9 rows (end with right side Row). K next Row to form hem turning. Work ribbing for 8 rows. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

With weaving st. turn back the facing on turning ridge and hem it to wrong side. Make 1 large red pompon for top of beret.

Using navy and size 5 needles cast on 5 sts. 

Row 1: Inc 1 st in first st, k 2, k 2 tog.

Row 2: P each st.

Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures long enough to fit over beret from rib band to rib band. Bind off sts.

Slip stitch band together lengthwise and steam press. Sew band to beret.
