Men's Irish Knit Cardigan 

These directions are for small size (36-38). Changes for medium size (40-42) and large size (44-46) are in parentheses.

MATERIALS

BERNAT BLARNEYSPUN (50 g balls) -- 18(20-22)

OR ANY EQUIVALENT KNITTING WORSTED WEIGHT YARN THAT WILL GIVE THE SPECIFIED STITCH GAUGE

  1 pair each BERNAT-Aero straight knitting needles Nos. 5 and 7 (3.75 mm and 4.50 mm) OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES THAT WILL GIVE THE SPECIFIED STITCH GAUGE

1 BERNAT-Aero cable stitch needle

3 buttons

GAUGE: 5sts = 1 inch 7rows = 1 inch

NOTE: The abbreviations used in the following directions are preceded by the explanation the first time they appear.

PATTERN STITCH FOR BACK

Row 1: K 1, * p 1, k 4, repeat from *, ending P1, kl.

Row 2: P 1, * k 1, p 4, repeat from *, ending kl, pl.

Row 3: Purl.

Row 4: Repeat Row 2.

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch for back.

BACK: Using smaller needles, cast on 98 (108,118) sts.

Row 1: * K in BACK of next st (kl B), p1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 2: * K 1, p 1- repeat from * across Row.

Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches.

Change to larger needles and work even in pattern stitch for back until piece measures 15 inches, ending with a wrong side Row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6 (7-9) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other Row 3 (4-5) times. Work even in pattern as established on 80 (86-90) sts until armholes measure 6¾ (7¼ -7¾) inches. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other Row 3 times. Armholes should measure 7½ (8-8 ½) inches.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 (2-6) rows bind off 6 (7-7) sts. At the beg of each of the next 4 (6-2) rows bind off 5 (6-6) sts. Bind off remaining 30 sts.

PATTERN STITCH FOR LEFT FRONT

Row 1: K 1, *.p 1, k 4, repeat from * 6 (7-8) times more, p 3, k 8, p 3.

Row 2: and all even rows: K 3, p 8, k 3, * p 4, k 1, repeat from * 6 (7-8) times more, p 1.

Row 3: P 39 (44-49); sl next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold in BACK of work, k next 2 sts, 2 sts from cable needle (C B 4); sl next 2 sts ) onto cable needle and hold in FRONT of work, ( next 2 sts, k 2 sts from cable needle (C F 4); )3.

Rows 5 and 9: Repeat Row 1.

Row 7: Repeat Row 3.

Row 11: P 39 (44-49), k 8, p 3.

Row 12: Repeat Row 2.

Repeat these 12 rows for pattern stitch for left Front.

LEFT FRONT: Using smaller needles, cast on 50 (54-60) sts.

Row 1: * K in BACK of next st (k 1 B), p 1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 2: K 1, p 1, repeat from * across Row.

Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches, inc 0 (1-0) st at beg of last Row -- 50 (55-60) sts.

Change to larger needles and work as follows: K 3, p 8, k 3, put a marker on needle, * p 4, k 1, repeat from * 6 (7-8) times, p 1. Work even in pattern st for left front until piece measures 10 inches, ending with a wrong side Row.

SHAPE NECK:

Row 1: Work to 2 sts before marker, k 2 tog, work to end of Row.

Repeat this dec every 4th Row 15 times more, and AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 15 inches, ending at arm edge and with same Row of pattern st as on back at underarm,

SHAPE ARMHOLE: At the beg of the next Row bind off 6 (7-9) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other Row 3 (4-5) times. When all neck decs have been completed, work even on 25 (28-30) sts until armhole measures 6¾ (7¼ -7¾ ) inches. Dec 1 .st at arm edge every other Row 3 times. Armhole should measure 7½ (8-8½) inches.

SHAPE SADDLE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 6(7-7) sts 2(1-3) times and 5(6-6) sts 2(3-1) times.

PATTERN STITCH FOR RIGHT FRONT

Row 1: P 3, k 8, p 3, * k 4, p 1, repeat from * 6(7-8) times more, k 1.

Row 2 and all even rows: P 1, * k 1, p 4, repeat from * 6(7-8) times more, k 3, p 8, k 3.

Row 3: P 3, C B 4, C F 4, p 39 (44-49).

Rows 5 and 9: Repeat Row 1.

Row 7: Repeat Row 3.

Row 11: P 3, k 8, p 39 (44-49).

Row 12: Repeat Row 2.

Repeat these 12 rows for pattern stitch for right front.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping.

TO DEC FOR NECK: Starting at front edge, p 3, k 8,p 3, k 2 tog through BACK LOOPS, work to end of Row.

PATTERN STITCH FOR SLEEVES

Row 1: K 0(1-1), * p 1, k 4, repeat from *, ending p 1, k 0(1-1).

Row 2: P 0(1-1), * k 1, p 4, repeat from *, ending k 1, p 0(1-1). Row 3: Purl.

Row 4: Repeat Row 2.

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch for sleeves.

SLEEVES: Using smaller needles, cast on 50 (52-52) sts.

Row 1: * K in BACK of next st (k 1 B), p 1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 2: · K 1, p 1, repeat from * across Row.

Repeat these 2 rows for 3 inches, inc 1 st at end of last Row -- 51 (53-53) sts.

Change to larger needles and work in pattern st for sleeves, inc 1 st each end of needle every 6th Row 12 (14-16) times, forming new patterns as sts are inc. Work even in pattern as established on 75 (81-85) sts until piece measures 19 (19¼, 19½) inches, ending with a wrong side Row.

SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6 (7-9) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every 4th Row 2 (2-4) times then every other Row 13 (15-13) times.

At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts.

SHAPE SADDLE: Work even in pattern as established on 15 sts until saddle measures 5 (5½,-6) inches. Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew front and back shoulders to saddle. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. FRONTBAND: Using smaller needles, cast on 11 sts.

Row 1: P 1, * k 1 B, p 1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 2: K 1, * p 1, k 1, repeat from · across Row. Repeat these 2 rows twice more.

BUTTONHOLE: On the next Row work 4 sts, bind off the next 3 sts, work to end of Row. On the next Row cast on 3 sts over those bound off previous Row. Make 2 more buttonholes, evenly spaced -- the last one to be made at start of neck shaping. Continue in ribbing until front band is same length as front and neck edges, stretching slightly. Bind off. Finish buttonholes. Sew front band in place, stretching slightly. Sew on buttons.
