MATERIALS
Worsted weight (2 oz. skeins) ~ 16 (17-18-19)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 8
1 set d p needles No. 8
GAUGE: 9 sts - 2 inches 6 rows -- 1 inch
PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 13 (14-15-16) sts plus 7.
Row 1: * K 1, wrapping yarn around needle 4 times P the next st, P 3, wrapping yarn around needle 4 times P the next st, K 7 (8 9 10), repeat from *, ending K 1, wrapping yarn around needle 4 times P the next st, P 3, wrapping yarn around needle 4 times P the next st, K 1.
Row 2: * P 1, with yarn in front of work, dropping extra wraps off needle sl the next st (1 long st made), K 3, bring yarn to front of work, dropping the extra wraps off needle sl the next st (1 long st made), P 1, K 6 (7 8 9), repeat from * ending P 1, work 1 long st, K 3, work 1 long st, P 1.
Row 3: * K 1, with yarn in back of work sl 1, bring yarn to front of work, P 3, throw yarn to back of work, sl 1, K 7 (8-9 10), repeat from *, ending K 1, with yarn in back of work sl 1, bring yarn to front of work, P 3, throw yarn to back of work, sl 1, K 1.
Row 4: * P 1, with yarn in front of work sl 1, throw yarn to back of work, K 3, bring yarn to front of work, sl 1, P 1, K 6 (7 8-9), repeat from *, ending P 1, sl 1, throw yarn to back of work and K 3, bring yarn to front of work, sl 1, throw yarn to back of work, K 3, bring yarn to front of work, sl 1, P 1, K 6 (7 8-9), repeat from *, ending P 1, sl 1, throw yarn to back of work and K 3, bring yarn to front of work, sl 1, P 1.
Row 5: * K 1, drop long st from left hand needle, sl next 3 P sts onto a d p needle and hold in back of work, pull 2nd long st through the dropped long st and K, place the dropped long st back on left hand needle, P 3 sts from d p needle, K the long st (a cross pattern made), K 7 (8-9-10), repeat from *, ending K 1, work a cross pattern on next 5 sts, K 1.
Row 6: * P 1, K 5, P 1, K 6(7 8 9), repeat from *, ending P1, K5, P1.
Repeat these 6 rows for pattern stitch.
BACK: Using straight needles, cast on 62 (66-72 76) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 3 inches, inc 1 st at end of last Row –63 (67-73-77) sts.
Then work as follows:
Row 1: K 2 (2-3-3), put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of pattern st on next 59 (63-67-71) sts, put a marker on needle, K 2 (2-3-3).
Row 2: K 2 (2-3-3), work Row 2 of pattern st on next 59 (63- 67- 71) sts, K 2 (2-3-3). Keeping the 59 (63-67-71) sts between markers in pattern st and remaining sts in garter st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 8th Row 7 times. Work even in pattern as established on 77 (81-87-91) sts until piece measures 13 ½ (13 ½-14-14) inches.
SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of thc next 2 rows bind off 5 (5-6-6) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other Row 4 times. Work even in pattern as established on 59 (63-67-71) sts until armholes measure 7 ¼ (7 ½-7 ¾-8) inches.
SHAPE SHOULDERS
At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 5 (5-6-6) sts. At the beg of each of thc next 2 rows bind off 5(6-5-6)sts. Sl remaining 29 (31 33 35) sts onto a holder.
FRONT: Work to correspond to back until armholes measure 2 inches—59 (53-67 71) sts.
SHAPE NECK: Work 20 (22-24-26) sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off center 19 sts, work last 20 (22-24-26) sts. Working on both sides at once, at each neck edge dec 1 st every 4th Row 5 (6-7-8) times. Work even on 15 (16-17-18) sts of each side until armholes measure 7 ¼ (7 ½-7 ¾ - 8) inches.
SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 5 (5-6-6) sts twice and 5(6-5-6) sts once.
SLEEVES: Using straight needles, cast on 36 (38~40-42) sts.
K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 ½ inches, inc 1 st at end of last Row- 37 (39-41-43) sts.
Then work as follows:
Row 1: K 2, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of pattern st on next 33 (35-37-39) sts, put a marker on needle, K 2. Keeping the 33 (35-37-39) sts between markers in pattern st and remaining sts in garter st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1 ½ inches 9 times. Work even in pattern as established on 55 (57-59-61) sts until piece measures 18 (18-18 ½ -18 ½ ) inches.
SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5 (5-6-6) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other Row for 4 ¼ (4 ½ - 4 ¾ - 5) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining sts.
FINISHING: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.
COLLAR: Using d p needles, with right side facing you, pick up 33 (35-37-39) sts along right neck edge, K the 29 (31-33-35) sts from holder onto same needle, pick up 33 (35-37-39) sts along left neck edge—95 (101-107-113) sts. Working back and forth, P 1, K 1 in ribbing for 4 inches. Bind off in ribbing. Sew short edges of collar to bound off sts of front with right side overlapping. Steam.
