Junior Miss  sweater with cap  

Instructions are for size 2. Changes for sizes 4 and 6 are in ( ). 

Materials; Worsted weight yarn  (2-oz. skein) — 4 (5-5) Opal Blue, 1 each Scarlet  and White

Knitting needles size 9 OR SIZE FOR Gauge; size 13 Susan  knitting needles for hat. 

buttons. 

Gauge (size 9 needles)—9 sts = 2”; 9 rows = 1'; (size 13 needles) —3 sts = 1”; 6 rows = I”. 

Finished chest measurements: 22½ (24½ - 26½)”. 

Back: With white and smaller needles, cast on 52(55-58) sts.

Working in garter st (k every Row), work 4 rows white, 4 Scarlet, 4 white and 4 Scarlet.

Change to Opal Blue; work even until piece measures 7(8-9)” or desired length to underarm. 

Shape armhole: Bind off 2 sts beg next 2 rows; dec 1 st each end every other row twice.

Work even until armhole measures 4½ (5-5½)".  Bind off, 

Right Front; With White and smaller needle, cast on 28 (31-34) sts.

Working stripes as for Back, dec 1 st at beg of next and every other row (front edge) 7 times.

Work even on 21 (24-27) sts until piece measures same as Back to underarm, end at side edge. 

Shape Armhole: Bind off 2 sts beg of next raw; dec 1 st at same edge every other row twice.

Work even until armhole measures 2 (2½ - 3)", end at front edge. 

Shape Neck: Bind off 4 sts beg next row; bind off 3 sts at same edge 1(2-2) times.

Work even until armhole measures same as Back to shoulder; bind off rem'g sts. 

Left Front: Work as for Right Front, reversing shaping. 

Sleeve: With white and smaller needles, cast or, 38 (40-42) sts.

K 2 rows White, 4 Scarlet, 4 white and 4 Scarlet, cont with Opal Blue until piece measures 3”. 

Shape Cap: Bind off 2 sts beg next 2 rows; dec 1 st each end every other row 13 (14-15) times. Bind off rem'g 8 sts. 

POCKETS (make 2): With White and smaller needles, cast on 20 sts.

Working in garter st. work 2 rows White, 4 Scarlet, 4 White and 18 Opal Blue; bind off.

Sew a pocket to each front as shown in photo­graph. 

FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams. Being careful to keep work flat pick up sts around neck edge, Inc'g 1 st at each end every other row, k 4 rows Scarlet, 4 White, 4 Scarlet and 4 White; bind off. 

Being careful to keep work flat, pick up sts along Blue portion of left front edge. lnc'g 1 st at each edge every other row, work as for neck bind off.

Mark for 5 buttons evenly spaced.

Work right front as for left, working buttonholes on 9th row as follows: * K to next marker, bind off 3 sts. Rep from  *, k to end. On next row, cast on 3 sts over bound-on sts. 

Sew sleeves to armholes, sew sleeve and underarm seams. Sew ends of bands together. 

CAP (Use double strand of yarn throughout): With White and larger needles, cast on 50 sts. Working in garter st with Scarlet, work 2 rows. Work 2 rows White, B Opal Blue, 2 White, 2 Scarlet and 2 White. Change to Opal Blue. 

Dec Row 1; * K 8, sl 1, k 1, psso, repeat from * across.

Next Row: K. 

Dec Row 2: * K 7, sl 1, k 1, psso; repeat from * across. 

Next Row: K. 

Continue dec'g 5 sts every other Row until 10 sts remain. 

Last Row: K 2 tog across Row—5 sts. Break off thread, leaving a long strand. Thread yarn through sts, draw up and secure. Sew back seam.
