Instructions are for size 8. Changes for sizes 10, 12 and 14 are in ( ).

Materials; Sport yarn - 4 oz. MC (burgundy), 

1 oz. each -  A (blue), E (gold), F (navy), C (dark green), ½ oz. each B (red) and D (dark pink) and scraps C (light green), H (light pink) and  I (white); 

Sizes 3 and 5 knitting needles or size for gauge. 

Gauge 6 sts = 1", 9 rows = 1".

Finished measurements: Chest-29 (31-33-35)"; sleeve width at underarm-10¾ (11¾ -12 -12½)". 

Back: With MC and smaller needles, cast on 86 (92-98-104) sts.

Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 4", inc'g 1 st each end on last row.

Change to larger needles and st st (k 1 row,  p 1 row).

Work 2 rows 4, 2 MC, 1 B, 1 MC, 2 C, 1 D, 

PATTERN 1

Rows 1 and 3: With F. p 0(2-0-2), * p 4 E, 4 F. Rep from *across, end p 0 (4-4-0) E. 

Rows 2 and 4: K 0 (4-4-0) E, * K 4 F,  4 E, Repeat from * across, end 0 (2-0.2) F. 

Rows 5 and 7: P 0 (2-0-2) E. p 4 F, 4 E, Rep from * across, end p 0 (4-4-0) F. 

Rows 6 and 8: K 0 (4-4-0) F, * k 4 E, 4 F, Rep from * across. end k 0 (2-0-2) E. 

Rows 9-12: Rep Rows 1 - 4. 

Work 2 rows B, 1 A, 2 D, 4 G, * 2 D, 1 H, 2 D, 4 G*. Repeat from * to * 1(2-3-4) times more, work 2 rows D, 1 H, 1 D, 1 C, Following chart and reading right-side rows from right to left, wrong-side rows, left to right, work pattern ll, When chart is complete.

Shape Armhole: Bind off 6 (6-8-8) sts beg next 2 rows.  Dec 1 st each end of next, then every other Row 5 (6-6-6) times  66 (70 - 72 - 78) sts. AT SAME TIME work 1 row E, 1 F, 1 E, 1 A, 2 E, 2 I, 1 H, 2 I, 2 E. 

PATTERN Ill-Rows 1 and 3: 2(2-0.2) B, 4 MC, 4 B, Rep from *  across. end 0(4-0-4) MC. 

Rows 2 and 4: 0(4-0-4) MC, * 4 B, 4 MC, rep from * across, end 2 (2-0-2) B. 

Rows 5 and 7: 2 (2-0-2) MC,  * 4 B, 4 MC, rep from * across, end 0 (4-0-4) B. 

Rows 6 and 8: 0 (4-0-4) B, * 4 MC, 4 B. rep from across, end 2(2-0-2) MC. Rep last 8 rows times more. Work 2 (4-6-8) rows F, 1 C, 2 (2-2-4) G, 1 C, 2 (2-4-4) F, 1 A, 1 F, 1 E. 

Pattern IV:

Row 1: * 1 -E, 2 D, rep from * across, end 0 (1-0-0) E.

Row 2: 0(1-0-0) E, * 2 D, 1 E, Rep from * across. 

Repeat last 2 rows 0 (1-1-1) time. 

Work 2 rows E. 

Shape Shoulders: Cont'g in E, bind off 5 (5-4-5) sts beg next 2 rows; 5 sts beg next 6 rows. Place rem'g 26 (30-34-33) sts on holder 

Front: Work as for Back to 1 Row before armhole. Work Row F, inc'g 1 st. 

Shape Armhole and V-Neck: With E. bind off 6 (6-8-8) sts, work until 38 (41-42-45) sts are on needle place rem'g 45 (48-51-54) sts on a holder. Working colors as on Back, dec 1 st at arm edge every other Row 5 (5-6-6) 1 times. -AT SAME TIME! dec 1 st at neck edge ever 3rd Row until 20 (20-19-20) sts remain. Work even until armhole measures same as Back to shoulder.

      

 Shape Shoulder as on Back: 

Left Side: Right side facing, slip sts from front holder to needle, slip center st to a safety pin, attach 1 and work across rem'g sts.

Complete as for Right Side, reversing all shaping 

Sleeves: With MC and smaller needles, cast on 46 (50-54-58) sts. Work 14 rows k 2, p 2 ribbing, inc'g 1 st each end of last Row 48 (52-56-60) sts.

Change to larger needles and st st, Inc 1 st each end every 10th Row 8 times 64 (68-72-76) sts. 

AT SAME TIME, work 2 rows B, 10 (10-14-14) F. work Pattern ll from chart, work [2 rows E, 2 F] 6 times.

Work 3 rows E, 2 F, 4 E, 1 F, 5 E. 

Pattern V:

Row 1: * K 3 E, 1 B, Rep from * across. 

Row 2: * P 2 B, 1 E, 1 B, Rep from across. Work 12 (14-14-16) rows B. 

PATTERN VI

Row 1: *2 B, 2 H, Rep from * across 

Row 2: * 2 H, 2 B, Rep from * across.

Repeat last 2 rows once.

Work 12 (14-14-16) Row B. Following chart, work Pattern VII.

Shape Cap: With MC, bind off 6(6-8-8) sts beg next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each end every other row until 20 sts remain: then every 4th Row twice; bind off.

Neckband: Sew right shoulder seam.

Right side facing, with MC and smaller needles, pick up and k 48 (50-52-54) sts along left neck edge, place marker on needle, k center st from safety pin, place marker on needle, pick up and k 48 (50-52-54) sts along right neck edge, k sts from Back holder - 123 (131-139-147) sts.

Row 1 (wrong side): * P 2, k 2*, rep to within 2 sts of marker, p 2 tog, sl marker,  p 1, sl marker, p 2  tog, k  2, p 2, across. 

Row 2: Work in ribbing as established to within 2 sts of marker, k 2 tog, sl marker, k 1, sl marker, k 2 tog, finish Row in ribbing as established.

Rep last 2 rows twice, rep Row 1 once more, bind off in ribbing. Sew rem'g seams; sew in sleeves.

Good Housekeeping 1972
