 Hooded Childs Pullover

Be Sure Your Stitch Gauge Is Correct

Directions for Size 4, Changes for size 6 & 8 are in parentheses.

Materials Needed: 4-Ply knitting yarn (4 oz. pull skeins): 3 (3- 4) skeins.

Needles: One pair each "Boye" needles Sizes 6 and 7 and one circular needle Size 7.

Gauge: Stockinette Stitch on Size 7- 5 sts to 1 inch & 13 rows to 2 inches.

Back:With Size 6 needles cast on 56 (62-68) sts.

K 1 and P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches.

Increase 6 sts across last Row.

Change to Size 7 needles. Work in St St on the 62 (68-74) sts to 9 (10, 11) inches from start or desired length to underarm, end on wrong side.

Width across back is about 12½ (13½ , 14¾ ) inches.

Armholes: Bind off 2 (3, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each side every other Row until 54 (58-60) sts rem.

Work on the 54 (58, 60) sts until armholes measure 5½ (6, 6½) inches straight above underarm

Width across shoulders is 11 (11½, 12) inches.

Shoulders: Bind off 5 (5, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 5 (6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Sl rem’ing 34 (36, 36) sts to a holder for back of neck.

Front: Work same as back until armholes measure 3 ½ (4, 4 ½ ) inches straight above underarm, end on wrong side.

Neck: K 18 (19, 20) sts and sl them to a holder, K center 18 (20, 20) sts and sl them to a second holder for neck, K to end: 18 (19, 20) sts rem on needle.

Bind off 2 sts at neck edge 3 times then dec 1 st at same edge every Row twice.

Work on rem'ing 10 (11, 12) sts to match back armhole, end at armhole edge.

Shoulder: Bind off 5 (5, 6) sts at armhole edge once then 5 (6, 6) sts at same edge once.

Starting at opposite neck edge, work other side the same.

Sleeves: With Size 6 needles, cast on 34 (38, 42) sts.

K 1 and P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches inc'ing 7 sts across last Row.

Change to Size 7 needles.

Work in St St on the 41 (45, 49) sts to 5 inches from start, end on wrong side.

Inc 1 st each side on next Row then every 8th Row twice more.

Work on the 47 (51, 55) sts to 11 (12, 13) inches from start or desired length to underarm, end on wrong side.

Width across sleeve is 9½ (10¼, 11) inches.

Sleeve Cap: Bind off 2 (3, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each side until 25 sts rem.

Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows.

Bind off rem'ing 13 sts.

Hood: Cast on 6 sts on circular needle, with same needle starting at center front, K 9 (10, 10) sts from holder, pick up and K 16 sts on right front neck to shoulder, K the 34 (36, 36) sts from holder at back of neck inc'ing 1 st at center back, pick up and K 16 sts on left front neck edge, K rem'ing 9 (10, 10) sts from front holder, cast on 6 sts.

Work on the 97 (101, 101) sts as follows:

Row 1: - wrong side: P 6 for front edge and hem, P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * to last 6 sts, P 6. Turn.

Row 2: K 6 for front edge and hem, K 1, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * to last 6 sts, K 6 for front edge and hem. Turn.

Repeat last 2 rows until hood measures 8 (8½, 9) inches from start, end on right side.

Next Row: P 6, work 42 (44, 44) sts in ribbing, place marker on needle, work center st, place another marker on needle, work to end.

Dec Row - right side: Work to 4 sts before marker, K 2 tog, P 2 tog, sl marker, K center st, sl marker, P 2 tog, K 2 tog, work to end: 2 sts dec'd at each side of center st.

With care to keep continuity of ribbing, repeat Dec Row every other Row 4 more times.

Bind off rem'ing 77 (81, 81) sts.

Finishing: Seam shoulders.

Sew sleeves in place then sew side and sleeve seams.

Sew top of hoop with a weaving st. Fold back hem at front edge and sew in place leaving ½ inch openings to insert cord.

Cord: With Size 7 needles, cast on 3 sts.

Work in St St for about 30 inches.

Bind off. Pull cord tight so that edges will curl and form cord.

Insert cord in hem of hood.

Knot at both ends.

Pouch Pocket: With Size 6 needles, cast on 65 (69, 73) sts.

Row 1: Right Side: K 2, P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, K 2.

Row 2: P 2, K 1, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, P 2.

Row 3: K 2, P 2 tog, P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * to last 4 sts, P 2 tog, K 2.

Row 4: P 2, K 2, P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * to last 4 sts, K 2, P 2.

Row 5: K 2, P 2 tog, K 1, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * to last 4 sts, P 2 tog, K 2.

Repeat Rows 2, 3, 4 and 5 until 41 sts rem.

Work 1 more row.

Bind off in ribbing.

Center pocket on front above ribbing and sew in place.
