Boy or Girls EASY Vest         

Convert this to crochet

Your child will begin the year at the head of her class in fashion   wearing this knit vest.

Directions are given for size 2-4 with changes for sizes 6-8 and 10-12 given in parentheses.

You will need 7 (8, 9) ounces Coats & Clark's Red Heart 4 ply hand knitting yam in burnt orange, number 9 standard knitting needles or size required to obtain given gauge and number 7 circular needle for working neck border.

Gauge: 5 sts equal 1 inch in pattern stitch on straight needles.
Note: This pattern stitch is very elastic.


TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

Size 2-4, 6-8, 10-12 .

Body chest measurement: 23, 25, 27,inches
Sweater chest measurement: 24½, 26, 27½ inches

BACK: Beginning at bottom edge, with straight needles, cast on 61 (65, 69) sts.

Row 1: (Right Side) *K 2, p 2, repeat from * across, end k 1.

Row 2: (Wrong Side) Repeat Row 1.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for pattern until 14½ (15, 16) inches (or desired length) from beginning.

Shape Shoulders: Bind off 6 (6, 7) sts at beginning of next 6 rows - 25 (29, 27) sts.  Bind off.

FRONT: Work same as back until 10 ½ (11, 11 ½) inches (or desired length) from beginning.

Shape Neck: Work in pattern as established across 30 (32, 34) sts, join another ball of yarn, work center St and sl to holder, work across remaining 30 (32, 34) sts. 

Working both sides at the same time dec one St every other neck edge Row 12 (14, 13) times - 18 (18, 21) sts each side. 

Work until same length as back to shoulder.

Shape Shoulders: Bind off shoulders same as back.

Finishing: Sew shoulder seams. 

Leaving 5½ (6, 6½) inches open below each shoulder seam for armhole, sew side seams.

Neck Border: With right side facing and circular needle, beginning at lower edge of "V", pick up 124 (128, 132) sts evenly spaced around neck edge to end of "V" on other side, pick up St on center front holder for last St - 125 (129, 133) Sts-, Do not join.

Work in ribbing (k 1, p1) for one inch, end on wrong side, P next Row for turning ridge. 

Continue in ribbing for one inch more.  Bind off loosely in ribbing. At center of "V," hand stitch overlapped edges together.

Armhole Borders: With right side facing and circular needle, pick up 79 (83, 87) sts evenly spaced around armhole edge. 

Do not join, but work back and forth on needle.

Row 1: (Wrong Side) P 2 tog, work in ribbing to last 2 sts, p 2 tog.

Row 2: K 2 tog, work in ribbing as established to last 2 sts, k 2 tog.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until ¾ inch from beginning, end wrong side. 

P 1 row for turning ridge.  Work even in ribbing for ¾ inch. 

Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Turn neck and armhole border to inside at turning ridges, sew in place.
