Pattern from McCall's NEEDLEWORK AND CRAFTS, Fall-Winter l970-71

Materials: Rayon and cotton rug yarn, 1 70-yard skein, Knitting needles NO.7 (or English size 6.) Dp needle for cable.  Two small buttons, Black embroidery floss, Large-eyed needle. Plastic ring, 5/8" diameter.

Gauge: 4 sts = 1"; 6 rows = 1" (stockinette st).

Pot Holder: FRONT: beg at lower edge, 

cast on 30sts. 

Work 4 rows garter st (k each Row).

Row 5 (right side): Knit

Row 6: K 3, P 24, K 3.

Rows 7-10: Repeat rows 5 and 6 twice.

Row 11: K 8, P 14, K 8.

Row 12: K 3, P 5, K 14, P 5, K 3.

Row 13: K 8, P 3, K 8, P 3, K 8.

Row 14: K 3, P 5, K 3, P 8, K 3, P 5, K 3.

Row 15: K 8, P 3, sl next 2 sts on dp needle, hold in back of work, k next 2 sts, K 2 sts from dp needle, sl next 2 sts on dp needle, hold in front of work, K next 2 sts, K 2 sts from dp needle, P 3 K 8.

Row 16: Repeat Row 14.

Row 17: Repeat Row 13.

Rows 18-24: Repeat rows 16 and 17, 3 times, then repeat Row 16.

Row 25: Repeat Row 15.

Rows 26-28: Work ros 16, 17, 16.

Row 29: Repeat Row 15.

Row 30: Repeat Row 16.

Rows 31-32: Repeat rows 11 and 12.

Rows 33-38: Repeat rows 5 and 6. 

K 5 rows.  Bind off in K.

BACK: Cast on 22 sts. Work in stockinette st. (k 1 Row, P 1 Row) for 32 rows.  Bind off in K.

FINISHING: Block front to measure 7" square; block back to measure 5-½" square.

Using 4 strands of black embroidery floss, sew on eyes each side of 3rd cable as shown.  With short stitches, embroider nose; embroider three short stitches on 3rd and 5th knit stitches of first cable for feet.

With wrong sides facing, center back on front; sew in place.  Sew on plastic ring in back for hanging loop.
