Fast Sweater Jacket with zipper

These directions are for small size (36-38). Changes for medium size (40-42) and large size (44-46) are in parentheses.  

MATERIALS

 Worsted weight yarn (2 oz. skeins)- 14 (15-16)

Main Color (M C); 1 Contrasting Color (C C) 1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 6 and 9 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW 1 d p needle or cable holder 1 steel crochet hook No. 2

 

1  Separating Zipper 24 inch length

GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch 6 rows = 1 inch

BACK: Using No. 6 needles and M C, cast on 76 (84-92) sts. K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 3 inches. Change to No. 9 needles and work even in stockinette st until piece measures 15 (15, 15 ½) inches, ending with a P Row. 

SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 2 (3-4) sts. 

Row 3: K 2, K 2 tog (dec), K to last 4 sts, sl 1, K 1, psso (dec), K 2. 

Row 4: Purl. Repeat these 2 rows 23(26-29) times more. Bind off remaining 24 sts.

LEFT FRONT: Using No. 6 needles and M C, cast on 40 (44--48) sts. K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 3 inches. 

Change to No. 9 needles. 

Row 1: Knit. 

Row 2: K 1, P to end of Row. 

Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 15 (15 ½,15 ½) inches, ending with a P Row.

 SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLE: 

Row 1: Bind off 2(3-4) sts, K to end of Row. Row 2: K 1, P to end of Row. 

Row 3: K 2, K 2 tog (dec), K to end of Row. Repeat these last 2 rows 18 (20-21) times more, ending with Row 2--19 (20-22) sts.

 SHAPE NECK: At front edge bind off 11 (10-8) sts. Continuing to dec 1 st at arm edge every other Row 3 (4-6) times more, dec 1 st at same edge every other Row 3 (4-6) times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping and decreasing for FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLE as follows: K to last 4 sts, sl 1, K 1, psso (dec), K 2.

PATTERN STITCH: To be worked on l0 sts as designated

Row l: P1, K 8, Pl.

Row 2 and all even rows: K 1, P 8, K 1.

Row 3: P 1, sl next 4 sts onto a d p needle and hold in back of work, K thc next 4 sts, K 4 sts from d p needle, P 1. Rows 5, 7 and 9: Repeat Row 1.

Row 10: Repeat Row 2.

Repeat these 10 rows for pattern stitch.

SLEEVES: Using No. 6 needles and M C, cast on 42 (44, 46) sts.

K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 3 inches.

Change to No. 9 needles.

Row 1: (wrong side): P 16 (17 18); join a ball of C C, P 10; join another ball of M C and P last 16(17, 18) sts. Keeping center 10sts in C C cable pattern st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1 inch 10 (13, 16) times.

Work even in pattern as established on 62(70, 78) sts until piece measures 19 (19¼, 19½ ) inches.

 SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 2 (3, 4) sts.

Dec in the same manner as back 24 (27, 30) times. Bind off remaining l0 sts.

COLLAR: Using No. 6 needles and M C, east on 102 sts.

K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 6 inches. Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew sleeves to back and front armholes.

Sew underarm and sleeve seams.

Sew on collar.

Using M C, work 1 row sc on each front edge. Steam. Sew in zipper.
