MATERIALS BERNAT Jaeger Shire Spun (which is a Bulky weight), 40 gram balls - 31 (32, 33)
1 pair each BERNAT-Aero straight knitting needles Nos.8 and 10 ½ (Canadian Needles Nos. 6 and 2) OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVETHE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 BERNAT-Acro crochet hook Size J(Canadian Wool Crochet Hook No. 8)
4 buttons1 small buttonLining, if desired
GAUGE: 3 sts = 1 inch 6 rows = 1 inch
NOTE 1: Yarn is used double throughout.
NOTE 2: This coat has been planned for 27 (27, 27½ ) inch finished length to underarm, allowing 2 inches for stretching. If you wish your coat to be longer or shorter, work more or less inches before first decrease Row.
PATTERN STITCH
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2 (right side) : P 1, * K next st in row below, P 1, repeat from * across row.
Repeat these 2 rows for pattern stitch.
BACK: Using larger needles and a double strand of yarn, cast on 55 (61, 65) sts.
Work even in pattern st until piece measures 21 (21, 21 ½ ) inches, ending with
Row 2. On the next row dec 1 st each end of needle and repeat this dec every 2 inches once more.
Work even in pattern as established on 51 (57, 61) sts until entire piece measures 25 (25, 25½) inches.
SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3 sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 3 (4, 4) times.
Work even on 39 (43, 47)sts until armholes measure 6½ (7, 7½) inches.
SHAPE SADDLE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 7 sts. At thebeg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6 (7, 8) sts.
Bind off remaining 13 (15, 17)sts.
LEFT FRONT: Using larger needles and a double strand of yarn, cast on 31 (33, 37) sts.
Work even in pattern st until piece measures 21(21, 21½) inches, ending with
Row 1. At the beg of the next row (arm edge) dec 1 st and repeat this dec every 2 inches once more.
Work even on 29 (31, 35)sts until entire piece measures 25 (25, 25½) inches, ending at arm edge.
SHAPE ARMHOLE: At the beg of the next row bind off 3 sts, work to end of row. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 (4, 4) times.
Work even on 23(24, 28) sts until armhole measures 5½, (6, 6½) inches, ending with row 2.
SHAPE NECK: At the beg of the next row bind off 6 (6, 8) sts, work to end of row. Dec 1 st at same edge.
EVERY ROW 4 (4, 5) times. Work even on 13 (14-15) sts until armhole measures 6½ (7, 7½) inches.
SHAPE SADDLE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 7 sts once and 6 (7, 8) sts once.
RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures 21 (21, 2½) inches.
BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge work 2 sts, bind off the next 3 sts, work to end of row.
On the next row cast on 3 sts over those bound off previous row.
Make 3 more buttonholes, evenly spaced - the last one to be made ½ inch below start of neck shaping.
SLEEVES: Using smaller needles and a double strand of yarn, cast on 31 (33, 33)sts. Work in pattern st for 1½ inches.
Change to larger needles and continue in pattern st until entire piece measures 3 inches.
On the next Row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every 4 (4, 3) inches 3 (3, 4) times more.
Work even on 39 (41, 43) sts until entire piece measures 16 (16, l6½ ) inches.
SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3 sts.
Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row until 11 sts remain.
SHAPE SADDLE: Work even on 11 sts for 4 (4¼, 4½ ) inches.Bind off .
POCKETS: Make 2. Using larger needles and a double strand of yarn, cast on 21 sts.
Work even in pattern st for 7 inches. Bind off.
COLLAR: Using larger needles and a double strand of yarn, cast on 53 (55, 57)sts. Work even in pattern st for 4 ½ inches.
Bind off.
FINISHING: If lining is desired, cut before seaming garment. Steam pieces, stretching 2 inches below armholes.
Sew sleeves to front and back armholes and saddle. Sew underarm seams.
FRONT BAND: Using smaller needles and a double strand of yarn, with right side facing you pick up 111 (111, 113) sts along front edge.
Work in pattern st for 1 inch, ending with a wrong side Row.
Bind off in pattern st. Using a double strand of yarn, work 1 row sc on cast on and 2 side edges of pockets.
Sew cast on edge of collar to neck edge to within 1½ inches of each front edge, holding in any extra fullness.
Using a double strand of yarn, work 1 row sc on each short edge of collar.
Sew on pockets 12 inches above lower edge and 1½ inches from each arm edge.
Finish buttonholes. Steam seams. Line, if desired. Sew on buttons. Make a small button loop at upper right front edge and sew small button under collar.
