   MATERIALS

Worsted weight yarn (2 oz. skeins) – 16 (18-19-21)Main Color (M C);2 Contrasting Color (C C).

1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 8 and 10.

6 buttons, 2 yds 1½ inch grosgrain ribbon.

GAUGE: 3 sts - 1 inch 8 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 2 sts plus 1.

Row 1: K 1, * K the next st in Row below, K 1, repeat from * across Row.

Row 2: K 2, * K the next st in Row below, K 1, repeat from * ending K 2 instead of K 1.

Repeat these 2 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK: Using M C and No. 10 needles, cast on 53 (57, 59, 63) sts.

Work even in pattern st until piece measures 20 (20, 20½, 20½) inches.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 4 (4, 4, 5) sts.

Dec 1 st each end of needle every other Row 2 (3, 3, 3) times.

Work even in pattern st on 41 (43, 45, 47) sts until armholes measure 7½ (7¾, 8, 8¼ ) inches.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 4(5, 5, 5) sts. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5 (4, 4, 5) sts.

Bind off remaining 15 (15, 17, 17) sts.

POCKET LINING: Make 2. Using M C and No. 10 needles,cast on 13 sts. Work even in pattern st until piece measures 5 inches. Sl sts onto a holder.

RIGHT FRONT: Using M C and No. 10 needles, cast on 25 (27, 29, 31) sts. Work even in pattern st until piece measures 11 inches.

POCKET OPENING: On the next Row work 6 (7, 8, 9) sts, bind off the next 13 sts, work last 6 (7, 8, 9) sts.

INSERT POCKET: On the next Row work in pattern st to pocket opening, put a marker in work, work across 13 sts of one pocket lining, put a marker in work, work to end of row. Continue in pattern st on 25 (27, 29, 31) sts until piece measures 20 (20. 20½, 20½) inches.

SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 4(4, 4, 5) sts. At the same edge dec 1 st every other Row 2 (3, 3, 3) times. Work even on remaining 19 (20, 22, 23) sts until armhole measures 6 (6¼, 6½, 6¾ ) inches.

SHAPE NECK: At front edge bind off 4 (4, 6, 6) sts. At same edge dec 1 st EVERY ROW 2 (2, 3, 3) times. Work even on 13 (14-14-15) sts until armhole measures 7 ½ (7 ¾, 8, 8 ¼) inches.

SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 4 (5-5-5) sts twice and 5 (4, 4, 5) sts once.

LEFT FRONT: Work to correspond to right front, reversing all shaping.

SLEEVES: Using C C and No. 8 needles, cast on 28 (30, 32, 34) sts.

K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches, inc 1 st at end of last row.

Break off C C. Change to No. 10 needles, join M C and work in pattern st until piece measures 4 inches.

On the next Row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every 3 inches 3 times more.

Work even in pattern st on 37 (39, 41, 43) sts until piece measures 22 (22, 22 ½, 22 ½) inches.

SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 4 (4, 4, 5) sts.

Dec 1 st each end of needle every 4th Row until 17 sts remain.

Work even in pattern st until cap measures 4 ½ (4 ¾ -5-5 ½) inches.

At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 2 sts.

Bind off remaining sts.

LEFT FRONT BAND: Using C C and No. 8 needles, cast on 10 sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing until piece measures same length as front to neck shaping. Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT BAND: Work to correspond to left front band, forming first buttonhole when piece measures 6 inches.

BUTTONHOLE: Work 3 sts in ribbing, bind off the next 4 sts, work to end of row.

On the next Row cast on 4 sts over those bound off previous row.

Make 5 more buttonholes, evenly spaced -- the last one to be made 1 inch below start of neck shaping.

COLLAR: Using M C and No. 10 needles, cast on 49 (49, 55, 55) sts.

Work in pattern st until piece measures 7 inches.

Break off M C.

Using C C and No. 8 needles, pick up 22 sts along side of collar, work across sts on needle in K 1, P 1 ribbing, pick up 22 sts on other side of collar.

K 1, P 1 in ribbing on 93 (93, 99, 99) sts for 1 inch.

Bind off in ribbing.

FINISHING: POCKET FLAPS: Using C C and No. 8 needles, with right side facing you and holding work upside down, starting at one marker at top of pocket lining pick up 16 sts across pocket lining to other marker.

K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches.

Bind off in ribbing.

Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Set in sleeves.

Sew on front bands.

Sew collar to neck, to within ¾ inch of each front edge.

Face fronts with ribbon.

Steam seams.

Finish buttonholes.

Sew on buttons.
