SIZES: Misses' small (medium - large). Garment width around underarms, closed about 40" (42"-44").
MATERIALS, Bulky weight 7 (8-9) skeins (109 yards each). Colors White (A). 1 skein each Dark Brown (B), Light Brown (D), Medium Brown (D).
Straight needle No. 9 and Circular needle No, 10 ½ or size required to knit to gauge.
7 metal buttons. Crochet hook No. 00.
Gauge; 3 sts and 4 rows = 1" (stockinette st on No. 10 ½ needles).
NOTES: Do not use bobbins for color changes: wind pattern colors into small balls. Change colors on wrong side, lock strands by picking up new color from under dropped color carrying color not in use loosely across back of work. Cut and join colors as needed. Weave in yarn ends on wrong side.
Cardigan: Beg at cuff, with C and No. 9 needles, cast on 34 sts.
Work in k 1, p 1, ribbing for 2", inc 8 sts evenly spaced across last row - 42 sts.
Change to No. 10 ½ needle; do not join -
Work in stockinette st (k on right side, p on wrong side) following Chart 1. beg and end at S on chart.
Work to top of chart. Cut off B and C. With A, work in stockinette st inc 1 st at each edge every 11th (9th - 7th) Row 4 (5 - 6) times-50 (52, 54) sts.
Work even until 18" (19"- 20") from beg or desired sleeve length, end k Row.
Cast on for Back and Front: At end of each of next 2 rows, cast on 59 sts- 168 (170-172) sts.
Work for 1½" (1¾ "-2"), end wrong side.
Work Chart 2, beg and end at S (M-L); work to top of Chart 2.
Cut off D. With A, continue in stockinette st for 1 ½ " (1 ¾ "- 2"), end wrong side. Work Chart 3, and end at S (M-L).
At the same time when row 3 has been completed, divide for right front and back (right side): Continuing to follow Chart 3 work 82 (83 - 84) st. for right front, sl remaining sts on holder.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next row, then every row 11 (10 - 9) times more- 70 (72 - 74) sts. Work to lop of Chart 3. binding off on last row.
Back: Sl 86 (87 - 88) sts from holder to circular needle, continue to work Chart 3. binding off 4 sts at neck edge on next row, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 2 (3 - 4) times-80 sts. Work until Chart 3 has been completed. Turn Chart 3 upside down and beg row 2. work until 10 (8 - 6) rows have been completed. Continuing Chart 3 upside down, inc 1 st at neck edge on next row, then every other row 1 (2 - 3) times more, then cast on 4 sts on pat row 15 on chart at neck edge- 86 (87 - 88) sts. Sl sts to holder.
Left Front: With circular needle and C, cast on 70 (72 - 74) sts. Following Chart 3 upside down, work back and forth in stockinette st. beg and end at S (M-L), until 3 (4 - 5) rows have been completed. Continuing to follow
3 upside down, Inc 1 st at neck edge every row 12 (11 - 10) times-82 (83 -84) sts.
Next Row (right side): Working 4th row from top of Chart 3 upside down, work 82 (83 - 84) sts of left front, then work across 86 (87 - 88) sts of back - 168 (170 - 172) Sts.
Work until chart has been completed. Cut off B and C.
With A, work in stockinette st for 1½" (1 ¾" - -2"). Following Chart 2 upside down, work in stockinette st, beg and end at S (M-L) until chart has been completed. Cut off D.
Continue in stockinette st with A for 1½" (1 ¾" - 2"), end wrong side. Bind off 59 sts at beg of next 2 rows-50 (52 - 54) sts.
Left Sleeve: Work 2" from last bind-off. Dec 1 stat each edge on next Row, then every
11th ( 9th - 7th) Row 3 (4 - 5) times more-42 sts.
Work even until 14 (15"- 16") from beg of left sleeve or 4" less than desired sleeve length.
Turn Chart 1 upside down and work from S to S to top of chart.
Cut off B. Change to No. 9 needles. Work in k 1, p 1, ribbing for 2", dec 8 sts evenly spaced across first Row. 34 sts. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Finishing: Sew side and sleeve seams,
Collar: From right side, with circular needles and A. pick up and k 54 (56 - 58) sts along neck edge. Do not join.
Next Row: With A, p. Work Chart 4 beg and end at S (M - L).
Work to top of
4. Continue in stockinette st with A for 2 rows.
Next Row: With D, p.
Next Row: * With D, k second st on left-hand needle, k first st on left-hand needle. sl both sts from needle tog, repeat from * across row.
Next Row: With D, p.
Continue in stockinette st with A for 8 tows. Bind off. Fold in half and sew in place.
Row 1: From right side with A, starting at left front neck edge, work 2 sc in even other Row or st down left front, along lower edge and up right front working 3 sc in each corner. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: With B. work 1 sc between 2 sc, then 1 sc in skipped st or Row of' previous Row around crocheted edge of cardigan working 3 sc in each corner, making 7 buttonholes evenly spaced on right front with first one 3" from lower edge and the last one 1" below neck edge, as follows: Skip 2 Sc, ch 2 for each buttonhole.
Row 3: With D, work 1 sc between each sc of previous row working 3 sc in each corner and work sc in each ch-2 space for buttonhole. Fasten off. Sew on buttons.
