COATS & CLARK'S RED HEART CROCHET WOOL, 3 Ply, 12 balls of No. 420 Natural for Size 40; 13 balls for Size 42; 14 balls for Size 44 and 15 balls for Size 46.

  Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 2, or Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 1. pair No. 2 (2 ¾ mm. size).

Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Double-Pointed Sock Needles, 1 set No. 2 (2 ¾ mm.size).

GAUGE: 7 Sts make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.

Directions are given for Size 40. Changes for Sizes 42, 44 and 46 are in parentheses.

Pattern divisible by 4 with 2 over.

BACK . . . Starting at lower edge, ch 147 (155, 163, 167), (7 ch sts to 1 inch).

1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, * dc in next 2 ch. sc in next 2 ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn.

2nd Row: Skip first sc, dc in next sc, * sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

3rd Row: Sc in first 2 dc, * dc in next 2 sc, sc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last dc and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.

The last 2 rows (2nd and 3rd rows) constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 12 ½ (13, 13, 13) inches in all, ending with 3rd Row of pattern. Turn.

To Shape Armholes:

1st Row: Sl st cross first 10 sts, ch l, * sc in next dc, dc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * cross to within last l0 sts (10 sts decreased at both ends). Ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: Dec 1 st--to dec 1 st, work off 7 sts as 1 st then work in pattern across to within last 2 sts, dec st. Ch 1, turn.

Keeping continuity of pattern, dec 1 st at both ends of very Row until there remain 114 114, 118, 118) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures 9 ¼, (9¼, 10¼, 10 ¼) inches from first Row of armhole shaping, ending with 2nd Row of pattern. Turn.

Shape Shoulders:

1st Row: Sl st across first 8 sts, ch 1, and continue in pattern across to within last 8 sts (8 sts decreased at both ends). Turn.

2nd Row: Sl st in first 9 sts, ch 3 and work in pattern across to within last 8 sts (8 sts decreased at both ends). Turn. Repeat the last 2 rows once more. Break off.

BAND . . . With right side of work facing, attach yarn to lower edge and with No. 2 knitting pins, pick up and knit 146 (154, 162, 166) sts. Now work in stockinette st (p 1 Row, k 1 Row) for 1 inch, ending with a knit Row.

Next Row (hemline edge): K across. Starting with a knit Row, continue to work in stockinette st for 1 inch. Bind off loosely.

FRONT . . . Work as for Back until first Row of armhole shaping has been completed.

To Shape Neck: Next Row: Dec 1 st as before, work in pattern across next 61 (65, 69, 71) sts. Turn. Work over these 62 (66, 70, 72) sts for Right Front, decreasing 1 st at beginning of Row (neck edge) and 1 st at end of Row (armhole edge).

Continue in pattern, decreasing 1 st at armhole edge on each Row 4 (8, 10, 12) times more.

AT THE SAME TIME decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other Row until 32 sts remain. Work without decreasing until piece measures 9¼ (9¼, 10¼, 10 ¼ ) inches from first Row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge. Turn.

To Shape Shoulder: Dec 8 sts at armhole edge on each Row until all sts are worked off. Break off.

LEFT FRONT . . . Attach yarn to first free st at center front and work as for Right Front, reversing shaping. Complete Band at lower edge as for Back.

ARMHOLE BAND . . . Sew shoulder seams. With right side of work facing, pick up and knit along armhole edge 180 (180, 198, 198) sts. Work exactly as for other Bands.

NECKBAND . . . With right side of work facing, attach yarn at left shoulder seam and with double-pointed sock needles pick up and knit along left neck edge 88 (88, 98, 98) sts, place a marker, pick up and knit 1 st at center, place a marker, pick up and knit 88 (88, 98, 98) sts along right neck edge, pick up and knit 50 (50, 54, 54) sts along back of neck. There are 227 (227, 251, 251) sts on needles. Join and work in rnds as follows:

1st rnd: K across to within 2 sts preceding marker, k 2 tog, slip marker, k 1, slip marker, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o, k to end of rnd.

2nd rnd: K around, slipping markers. Repeat last 2 rnds until piece measures 1 inch. 

Next rnd (hemline): P around, slipping markers. Continue to work in stockinette st (k each rnd), increasing 1 st before and after markers every other rnd for 1 inch. Bind off loosely.

Turn all Bands under at hemlines and sew in place. Sew up side seams. Block to measurements.
