TOPSY-TURVY DOLLS  

Shirley,  These patterns are so nice and fun to make for gifts or to sell. I just wanted to tell you that the last ones I made I used Knitting Needle size 6 and Crochet size F.  It just made them a small bit larger but easier to handle and stuff.  Thanks, Marilyn Hardigree

Size: About 10' tall.

Notes: Dolls are knitted in garter st (k each Row). When changing colors, always tie in colors at same side of work; leave 12" end for sewing doll tog.  

 

Dorothy and  Cowardly Lion  

Materials: Knitting worsted weight yarn; 3ozs. turquoise, 1 oz. earth light pink, brown and dark gold. Red embroidery floss. Polyester filling. Knitting needles No. 4.Crochet hook size D.

Yarn needle.

GAUGE: 4sts=1".  

Dorothy: Beg at waist, with turquoise, cast On 10 sts. K 16 rows. Cut turquoise, tie in pink. With pink, K 12 rows. Cut pink, tie in brown. With brown, k 24 rows. Cut brown, tie in turquoise. With turquoise. k 16 rows. Cut turquoise, tie in gold.  

Lion: With gold, k 68 rows. Bind off,

Dorothy's Arms (make 2): With pink, cast on 8 sts. K 4 rows. Cut pink, tie in turquoise. With turquoise, k 14 rows. Bind off.  

Lion's. Arms. (make 2): With gold. cast on 8 sts. K 16 rows. Bind oft.  

Lion's Ears and Snout (make 3 pieces): With gold, ch 2; 4 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in first sc. Ch 1, turn. Work 2nd sc in each sc around. SI st in first sc. End off.  

Skirt With turquoise, ch 23.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-22 sc. Ch 3, turn.

Row 2: Dc in first sc, 2 dc in each sc across-44 dc. Ch 3, turn.

Row 3: Dc in first dc, dc in next dc,  *  2 dc in next dc,  dc in each of next 2 dc, repeat from * across. end dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3. turn.

Row 4: Dc in first dc, dc in next dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, repeat from *  across. End dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

Work 9 more rows at dc, without increasing. End off.  

Finishing: Sew cast-on and bound-off edges tog. Sew upside edges on wrong side, rounding off corners slightly at each end to shape heads.

Leave opening at one side of lion's body for turning and stuffing. Turn to right side; stuff firmly; Sew up side. Gather top Row of Dorothy's blouse with matching yarn to form neck. Fasten yarn securely. With gold yarn, insert lion's neck in same way.

Fold arms lengthwise, sew up hands and sides; leave top open. Stuff and sew to sides of  body ¼" below neck. Pull arms slightly toward front and catch to front of body. Finish lion's arms the same.

 Dorothy's Hair: For each braid, cut 12 - 7 inch lengths of brown yarn, tie strands firmly tog at center. Fold strands at tie and braid ends for 1¼'  below tie. Fasten securely. Sew top of braid to hairline, sew braid to side of lace. Tie yarn bows around braids. Embroider bangs in straight sts across forehead.

Dorothy's Face With red floss, embroider tiny mouth in straight st. With black yarn or floss, embroider one lazy daisy st for each eye.

Lion's Mane: With brown yarn in yarn needle, working around ova) of face, pull double strand of yarn through knitted st leaving 1" loop; take a small st through same st to fasten loop. Cut through loops; trim mane.

Lion's Face: Sew ears below mane at top of face. Sew snout to lower center of face. Embroider nose triangle with brown yarn, using satin st, Embroider eyes as for Dorothy.

Place skirt on doll; sew up back seam. Sew skirt to doll at waistline.

Goldilocks and Bear

Materials: Knitting worsted weight yarn, 3 ozs. red, 2 ozs. brown, 1 oz. each of yellow and pink. Polyester filling. Knitting needles No. 4.

Crochet hook size D. Yarn needle.

Gauge: 4 sts=1".

Goldilocks; Beg at waist, with red, cast on 10 sts. K16 rows. Cut red, tie in pink. With pink, k 12 rows. Cut pink, tie in yellow. With yellow. k 24 rows. Cut yellow, tie in red. With red, k 16 rows. Cut red, tie in brown.

Bear: With brown, k 68 rows. Bind oft.

Goldilocks' Arms (make 2): With pink, cast on 8 sts. K 4 rows. Cut pink, tie in red. With red, k 14 rows. Bind off.

Bear's Arms (make 2): With brown, cast on 8 sts. K 18 rows. Bind off.

Bear's Ears and Snout (make 3 pieces): With brown, work as for Lion's ears and snout.

Skirt: With red, work as for Dorothy's skirt through Row 4. At end of Row 4, sI st in top of ch 3 at beg of Row to join work. Ch 3; do not turn.

Work 9 rnds of dc from right side without increasing, sI st in top of ch 3 to join each rnd. End off.

Finishing: Sew up and stuff doll as for Dorothy and Lion.

Goldilocks' Hair: Cut 10 - 3" strands of yellow for each tuft. Tie strands tog at center with matching yarn. Sew a tuft to each side of head at hairline. Tie red yarn bows to hair.

Goldilocks' Face; With red, embroider small mouth in straight st. With blue yarn or floss, embroider eyes in lazy daisy st.

Bears Face Sew ears to top of head. Sew snout to lower center of face. Embroider nose triangle with pink, using satin st. Embroider eyes as for Goldilocks.

Place skirt on doll. Sew up back opening. Sew skirt to doll at waistline.

 

Alice and white rabbit

Material: Knitting worsted weight yarn. 3 ozs. purple. 2 ozs. white, 1 oz. each pink and yellow. Polyester filling. Knitting needles No. 4.

Crochet hook size D. Yarn needle.

Gauge: 4 sts=1".

Alice : Beg at waist, with purple, cast on 10 sts. K 16 rows. Cut purple, tie in pink. With pink, k 12 rows. Cut pink, tie in yellow. With yellow, k 24 rows. Cut yellow, tie in purple. With purple, k 16 rows. Cut purple, tie in white.

Rabbit: With white, k 68 rows. Bind off.

Alice 's Arms (make 2): With pink, cast on 8 sts, K 4 rows. Cut pink. tie in purple. With purple, k 14 rows. Bind off.

Rabbit's Ann, (make 2): With white, cast on 8 sts. K 18 rows. Bind off.

Rabbit's Ears (make 2): With white, ch 5.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 3 ch. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2-5: Sc in each sc. Ch 1. turn each Row.

Row 6: Sc in first st pull up a lp in each of next 2 sts. yo and through 3 lps on hook, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 7: Pull up a p in each of first and 2nd  sts, yo and through 3 Ips on hook, Sc in last Sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 8: Dec as before over last 2 sc. End off.

Skirt with purple, work as for Dorothy's skirt, making rows 8 and 10 in white.

Finishing: Sew up and stuff doll as for Dorothy and Lion.

Alice 's Hair: Wind yellow yarn around 2' card-board 8 times. Tie strands tightly tog at one edge; cut through strands at opposite edge. Sew tied ends to side of head at hairline. Trim hair with bows.

Alice 's Facet With red, embroider small mouth in straight st. With blue yarn or floss, embroider eyes in lazy daisy st.

Rabbit's Face: Sew ears to head. With pink yarn or floss, embroider triangle for nose. Make eyes as for Alice 's eyes.

Place skirt on doll; sew up back seam. Sew skirt to doll at waistline.

 

Cinderella and Fairy Godmother

Materials: Knitting worsted weight yarn, 3 ozs yellow. 1 oz. each brown, pink, dark gold, red embroidery floss. polyester filling. knitting needles No.4. Crochet hook size D. Yarn needle. 5" sequin braid.

Gauge: 4 sts= I ".

Fairy Godmother: Beg at waist, with yellow, cast on 10 sts,. K 16 rows. Cut yellow, tie in pink. With pink, k 12 rows. Cut pink, tie in brown; With brown, k 24 rows. Cut brown, tie in yellow. With  yellow, k 16 rows. Cut yellow, tie in brown.

Cinderella: With brown, k 16 rows. Cut brown, tie in yellow. With yellow, k 24 rows. Cut yellow, tie in pink. With pink, k 12 rows. Cut pink, tie in brown. With brown, k 16 rows. Bind off.

Fairy Godmother's Arms (make 2): With pink, cast on 8 sts. K 4 rows. Cut pink, tie in yellow. With yellow. k 14 rows. Bind Oft.

Cinderella's Arms Work as for Fairy Godmother's arms using brown instead of yellow.

Skirt: With yellow, ch 23.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd  ch from hook and in each ch across - 22 sc. Ch 3, turn.

Row 2:  Dc in first sc, 2 dc in each sc across - 44 dc. Ch 3. turn.

Row 3: Dc in first dc, dc in next dc. * 2 dc in next dc. dc in each of next 2 dc, repeat from * across, end dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

Row 4: Dc in first dc, dc in next dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, repeat from  across, end dc in top of turning ch. SI st in top of ch 3 at beg of Row to Join work. Ch 3; dc not turn.

Work 9 rnds of dc without increasing, sI st in top of ch 3 to join each rnd. End off.

Apron: With gold, ch 7.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch-6 Sc. Ch 3, turn each Row.

Row 2:  2 dc in each sc across.

Row 3: * Dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * across.

Row 4:  * Dc in each of 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * across, Work 3 more rows of dc without Increasing. End off.

Make 2 gold chains about 6" long. Sew to top ends of apron for ties.

Finishing: Sew up and stuff doll as for Dorothy and Lion.

Cinderella's Hair Same as Alice 's hair. Tack hair ends tog at sides of face.

Cinderella's Face Same as Alice 's face.

Fairy Godmother's Face: Same as Alice 's face.

Fairy Godmother's Hair-~ With brown, embroider lazy daisy sis all around faces Form crown from sequin braid, sew to head.

Place skirt on doll; sew up back seam. Sew skirt to doll at waistline. Sew apron to front of skirt on Cinderella side. Tie ends at back.
