STARS AND STRIPES AFGHAN and Pillow

MATERIALS: 4-ply yarn-16 oz. red, 15 oz. white, 4 oz. blue; tapestry needle; K hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE: 7 dc = 2"; 4 dc rows = 3".
FINISHED SIZE: Each block is 3" x 3".

AFGHAN    Solid Block (113 red, 93 white)

Rod 1: Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch
3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 3,
join with sl st in top of ch 3 (12).
Rnd 2: Sl st in each of next 2 sts, sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, (3
dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in each ch-3 sp around, join as before. Fasten off.

Star Block (make 50)

Rnd 1: With white, repeat rnd 1 of solid motif. Fasten off.

Rod 2: Join blue with sl st in any ch-3 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in each ch-3 sp around, join as before. Fasten off.

Blue Half Block (make 8)

Row 1: With blue, ch 14, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next ch, ch 1, skip each of next 2 ch, 3 dc in next ch, ch 1, dc in each of last 3 ch, turn (9dc).

Row 2: Ch 4, skip each of next 2 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, skip each of next 3 sts, 3 de in
next ch-1 sp, skip each of next 2 sts, de in last st. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY
NOTE: All blocks are sewn tog, stitching through back lps only.

Sew 4 strips with 20 red blocks each and 3 strips with 11 red blocks each. Sew 3 strips
with 20 white blocks each and 3 strips with 11 white blocks each. Beginning with long strips
at bottom, sew strips tog beginning with red and alternating red and white. Sew 5 strips
with 6 star blocks each, sew 4 strips with 5 star blocks each and a half block on each end.
Beginning with stripe of 6 star blocks, sew strips tog alternating 6 star and 5 star strips.
Sew field of stars in place at top corner of stripes.

Edging
Working around entire edge, with right side of afghan facing you, join red with sc in seam
between red stripe and field of stars, (ch 2, 2 dc) in same seam, * (sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in center dc
of each 3-dc group and in each seam* around edge to field of stripes changing to blue in last
st made; repeat between * around, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.**

Pillow


MATERIALS: 4-ply yarn - 6 oz.. blue; 2 ½ oz. each red, white, gold; 50 small star appliques; polyester fiberfill; sewing thread; sewing and tapestry needles; F hook or size needed to obtain gauge.


GAUGE: 9 sc = 2"; 9 sc rows = 2".
FINISHED SIZE: 12" x 16 ½ " without fringe.

FRONT
Row 1: With red, ch 71, sc in 2nd ch from hook, st: in each ch across, turn (70).

Rows 2-4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At end of Row 4, fasten off.

Row 5: join white with sc in first st, sc in each st across, turn.

Rows 6-24: Alternating red and white, repeat rows 2-5 consecutively.

Row 25: join red with sc in first st, sc in next 35 sts changing to blue in last st made, sc in last 34 sts, turn.

Row 26: Ch 1, sc in first 34 sts changing to red in last st made, sc in last 36 sts, turn.

Row 27: Ch 1, sc in first 36 sts changing to blue in last st made, sc in last 34 sts, turn.

Row 28: Repeat Row 26. Fasten off.

Rows 29-52: Alternating white and red, repeat rows 25-28 consecutively. At end of Row 52, fasten off. Sew stars in position on blue field.

BACK

Row 1: With blue, ch 71, s(1 in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn (70).

Rows 2-52: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

At end of Row 52, fasten off.
Matching sts and ends of rows, sew front and back tog, stuffing before closing.

FRINGE
For each fringe, from gold, cut 5" strand. Fold strand in half, insert hook through st,
pull fold through, pull ends through fold and tighten. Fringe each st and end of each Row
around edge.
