PAT-A-CAKE 

COATS & CLARK'S RED HEART CROCHET WOOL, 3 Ply, 6 balls of No. 230 Yellow for Size 1,

7 balls for Sizes 2 and 3.

Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 2, or

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 1. 4 yards of ribbon, ¼ inch wide.

  GAUGE: 7 sc make 1 inch; 5 pattern rows make 1 inch.

Directions are given for Size 1. Changes for Sizes 2 and 3 are in parentheses.

SACQUE

YOKE... Starting at neck edge, ch 60.

1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 10 ch, 2 sc in next ch (1 sc increased--one half of Front), sc in next 7 ch, inc in next ch (sleeve), sc in next 19 ch, inc in next ch (Back), sc in next 7 ch, inc in next ch (other Sleeve), sc in next 11 ch (other half of Front). Ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: Sc in each sc across, making increases over previous increases.

Repeat 2nd Row until last Row of Back measures 10 (11, 12) inches across. Break off.

BODICE . . . Starting at center front, make a chain to measure 9 inches. 1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until Row measures 6 ½, (7, 7) inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 2, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Retaining all loops on hook, yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw a loop through, * skip next st, yarn over and draw a loop through next st, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 (joint half dc made), retaining all loops on hook, yarn over, draw up a loop in same place as last st was made. Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn.

5th Row: ·* Sc in joint half dc, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat the last 4 rows (2nd to 5th rows incl) until piece measures 33 (34, 35) inches, ending with 2 sc rows. Break off. Work a Row of sc's across top edge of Bodice, easing in fullness to fit Yoke. Sew to Yoke. Attach yarn to Left Front and work one Row of sc's all around outer edge. Join with sl st. Ch 4, turn.

Next Row (beading): Work around neck edge only as follows: * Skip 1 sc, dc in next se, ch 1. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Following Row: Sc in each dc and in each sp across. Break off.

SLEEVES . . .

Starting at underarm seam, make a chain 7 inches long. Work as for first Row of Bodice until Row measures 5 ½ (6, 6 ½ ) inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. Now work in Bodice pattern until piece measures 7 (7½, 8) inches. Break off.

CUFF .

1st Row: Attach yarn to tower edge of Sleeve, sc closely across, holding edge in to fit. Ch 1, turn.

2nd to 8th rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch I, turn. Break off at end of 8th Row.

Sew up Sleeve seams. Sew in Sleeves. Lace ribbon through beading, leaving ends free for ties. Cut two 10rich lengths of ribbon and sew in lace edges of: Yoke.

CAP

SIDE PIECE . . . Starting at front edge, make a chain 13 ½ inches long.

Work in pattern as for Bodice until piece measures 4 ¾ inches. Break off. Divide this piece into 3 equal parts. Now work sc's across the centerpiece only, until piece is the same length as sides. Break off. Sew sides o centerpiece.

RUFFLE. ·

1st Row: Attach yarn to lower front edge and make 2 sc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.

2nd and 3rd rows:

Repeat 3rd and 4th rows of pattern. Break off at end of 4th Row. Fold Ruffle back. Lace ribbon through 2nd sc Row. Make a rosette and sew in place at center front.

NECKBAND · Work 2 rows of sc's round lower edge, holding in to fit. Break off at end of 2nd Row. Cut two 15-inch lengths of ribbon and sew in place for ties.

BOOTEES

SOLE ·

Working with double yarn (for soles only), ch 20.

1st rnd: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, tr in next 6 ch, 9 tr in last ch (toe); working along opposite side of starting chain, make tr in next 6 ch, dc in next 3 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, 3 dc in same place as first 3 dc. S1 st in 3rd ch of ch-3.

2nd and 3rd rnds: Sc in each st around, increasing around curved ends as necessary to keep work flat. Join and break off.

UPPER. · · Starting at center, ch 9. 1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

2nd to 5th rows incI: Sc in each sc across, increasing 3 sc evenly over rounded end. Ch 1, turn.

At end of 5th Row, ch 16. Break off. Attach yarn to corresponding sc on opposite side, ch 17. Turn.

SIDE PIECE. ·

1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 15 ch, working in back loop only, make sc in each sc around, sc in next 16 ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd to 6th rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 6 th Row. Place the last Row of this piece against the Sole and, working through both thickness with a double strand of yarn in order to join them, make sc closely around. Break off.

CUFF. · 1st Row: Attach yarn to top of Bootie at center back, sc m each st across to corresponding position at opposite side, making 8 sc across front instep. Ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 4, turn. 3rd Row (beading): * Skip 1 SC, dc in next sc, ch l. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

4th Row: Sc in each dc and in each sp across, ending with sc in 3rd ch of turning chain. Ch 1, turn.

5th to 13th rows incl: Work in pattern as for Bodice. Break off at end of 13th Row.

Sew up back seam. With double yarn, sl st in front loop of each sc around upper. Break off.

Lace ribbon through spaces and tie ends in a bow.
