 Out Of The Ordinary Crib Afghan

Note:  From Jeannie S. Hello, Just wanted to add a little about the Out of the Ordinary Crib Afghan.  When I made this years ago, there were  more rows of  three double crochet, ch 1, 3 dc added around the last Row of Granny Squares...and then the picot edge. The first Row and the picot edge are of the same color, and the 6 rows in between, contrasted.   This makes it a little bit larger afghan...I don't know if this pattern leaves it off, or if I added it or what!
 
Size:    28" x 41"

Materials:    Knitting worsted, 7 ounces each bright pink (color A), yellow (color B), purple (color C); aluminum crochet hook size F or the size that will give you the correct gauge.

Gauge:    Each square measures 3".

Center-Strip Squares (make 5)  Starting at center with A, ch 6.  Join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd:  Ch 3, work 2 dc in ring, (ch 1, 3-dc shell in ring) 3 times; ch 1; join with sl st to top of ch-3.  Break off.
2nd rnd:  With B sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, in same sp work 2 dc, ch 1 and 3 dc (first corner), * ch 1, in next ch-1 sp work 3 dc, ch 1 and 3 dc (another corner).  Repeat from * twice more; ch 1; join.
3rd rnd:  Sl st to ch-1 corner sp and work a first corner in same sp, * ch 1, 3-dc shell in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, work corner in next corner sp.
Repeat from * twice more; ch 1, shell in next sp, ch 1; join.  Break off.
Hold 2 squares with right side facing.  Whipstitch tog along one side. Join to the remaining 3 squares in this manner to form one stripe.

One-Color Border around Strip:  1st rnd:  Sl st with C in any corner sp on stripe, work a first corner in same s, * ch 1, work shell in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * to next corner, also working a shell in each joining between squares.  At corner ch 1, work a corner in corner sp.  Work completely around stripe.  Break off.  Repeat rnd 6 times more.  Break off.

Inner Border of Squares (make 24)  Use B for first rnd, C for 2nd rnd, and A for 3rd rnd.  Join 2 strips of 7 squares each and 2 strips of 3 squares each.  Whipstitch short strips to end of One-Color Border and long strips to side.  Join a square in each corner.  Sl st with B in any corner sp and work 1 rnd as for first rnd of One-Color Border.  Break off.  Work 5 rnds with A and 1 with B in same manner.  Break off.

Outer Border of Squares (make 40)  Use B for first rnd, A for 2nd rnd, and C for 3rd rnd.  Join 2 strips of 7 squares each and 2 strips of 11 squares each.  Whipstitch short strips to ends of afghan and long strips to sides. Add corner squares.  Sl st with B in any corner sp and work 2 rnds as for first rnd of One-Color Border.  Do not break off.

Edging  For picot, ch 4, sc in 4th ch from hook (picot made), sc in each of next 5 sts, * work picot, sc in next 5 sts.  Repeat from * around; join. Break off.
