Like the blaze of a northern night, this beautiful afghan takes more time to make but the result is well worth the effort.
Size 40" x 54" before fringing
Weight yarn:
6 oz White
4 oz Gray
4 oz Black
4 oz Scarlet
Size K aluminum crochet hook (or size required for gauge)

5 sc = 2 4 rows = 1
Special Notes 1.Long sc: This special stitch is used to create the bargello effect. To work it, sc at base of next sc 2, 3 or 4 rows below keep the long stitches loose so afghan wont draw up. 2.To change color at end of a sc Row, draw up a loop in last st (2 loops on hook), change to new color, YO, draw through both loops: ch 1, turn.
Instructions:
With color A, ch 103 sts loosely.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; ch 1, turn.
Rows 2 through 4: Sc in each sc across: ch 1, turn. At end of Row 4, attach color B at last sc. Finish off color A, leaving a 4 tail for weaving later, ch 1, turn.
Row 5: With Color B, sc in first sc; * 1 long sc in next st 2 rows below (in Row 3), 1 long sc in next st 3 below (in Row 2); 1 long sc in next st 4 rows below (in Row 1); 1 long sc in next st 3 rows below, 1 long sc in next st 2 rows below sc in next sc; rep from * across; ch 1, turn.
Rows 6 through 8: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn. At end of Row 8, attach Color C at last sc. Finish off Color B, leaving a 4" tail for weaving later; ch 1, Turn.
Row 9 through 12: With Color C, rep Rows 5 through 8. At end of Row 8, attach Color D at last sc. Finish off Color C, leaving a 4' tail for weaving later ch 1, turn.
Rows 13 through 16: With color D, rep Rows 5 through 8:
Alternating 4 rows each of A, B, C, D, rep Rows 5 through 8 in pattern until piece measures 54", ending with 4 rows of Color A. Weave in all loose ends.
Fringe
Cut strands of each color, 16 long. Using 2 strands for each knot, knot in every 4th stitch across each short end of afghan. Knot in this color sequence: * White, Gray Black Red, rep from * across.
