  Midnight Lace Shawl


Convert this pattern to knit

SIZE: length at top long edge about 69".  Length from center of top edge to bottom point about 36".

Materials: Fingering weight yarn or cotton ---- about 7 oz.
Crochet hook size E, or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge: Rnds 1 and 2 measure 1 ½ " across
 

MOTIF 1: Ch 8, join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch l, work 16 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 6, (counts as dc, ch 3), skip next sc, * dc in next sc, ch 3, skip next dc; repeat from * around--- 8 ch loops, join with sl st to third ch of starting ch-6.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next ch, sl st in center ch, [ch 3, ( yo, insert hook in same center ch, yo and draw tip a loop to same height as ch-3 ----- about ½ ") twice, yo and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to lock--- starting puff st completed], ch 5, * [ (yo, insert hook in center ch of next ch-5 loop, yo and draw up a loop to ½ ") 3 times, yo) and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to lock--- puff st completed], ch 5- repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of starting puff st.

Rnd 4: Ch 6 counts as dc, ch 3), * dc in center ch of next ch-5 loop, ch 3 **, dc in top of next puff st, ch 3; repeat from * around, end last repeat at **; join with sl st to third ch of starting ch-6.

Rnd 5: Ch 5, (counts as dc, ch 2), * dc in center of next ch-3 loop, ch 2 **, dc in top of next puff st, ch 2; repeat from * around, end last repeat at ** ----- 32 ch 2  spaces, join with sl st to third ch of starting ch-5.  Note: Each of 8 points is worked separately, back and forth, in rows.

Rnd 6., * Work starting puff st- in next ch-2 space but do NOT ch-1 to lock st, in. same manner work puff st without lock in each of next 3 ch-2 spaces; now, working across Row from left to right, (yo and draw through sts of next puff st, ch 1 to lock-) 4 times; ch 3 (do not turn), work puff st without lock between first and second puff sts, close each of 2 puff sts separately as before; ch 3 ( do not turn), work 1 puff st between 2 puff sts, ch 1 to lock; working along left edge of point just made, ( ch 3, sl st in top of puff st on Row below) 3 times, ch 3, sl st in next dc of rnd 5; repeat from * around ---- 8 points made.  Fasten off

Rnd 7: On right edge of any point, join yarn in ch-3 at beg of 2 puff st Row, * ch 8, sc in in top of single puff at top point, ch 8, sc in ch-3 at left edge of 2-puff-st Row, ch 8 **, sc in ch-3 at right edge of 2-puff-st Row on next point; repeat from * around, end last repeat at **, sl st in first sc.

Rnd 8: Sl st in each of next 4 ch, sc in next ch, * ch 8, sc in fourth ch of next ch-8 loop following top sc of next point, ch 12 **, skip next ch-8 loop, sc in fifth ch of next ch-8 loop preceding top sc of next point; repeat from * around, end last repeat at ** 9 join with Sl st go first sc.

NOTE: on next Row, marked cli indicate joining points for future motifs.  Although Motif ! will be joined on only two sides, institutions call for in marking on all for sides as a model for future motifs.

Rnd 9: Sl st in each of next 4 ch, sop in next ch, * [ ch 13 (mark 7tit ch of ch-13,just made with contrast color thread, or other marker), sc in sixth ch-of next ch-12,] twice, ch 13 (mark 7th ch of ch-13 just made), sc in fourth ch of next ch-12, [ch 25 mark thirteenth ch of ch-15 just-made)--corner point made), sc in ninth ch of same ch-12 loop; repeat from * 3 times more, end ch 12, sc in first sc.  Fasten off.

Motif 2 -------- Rnd 1 through 8:

Work as for motif 1.

Rnd 9 Work as for Motif 1, except join with sl st in corresponding marked ch on one side only, but being sure to join the 13th marked ch of corner at each edgd of side to be joined, completing remainder of rnd as for motif 1. Fasten off.

Motif 3: Work as for previous mofit, except join to adjacent free side of Motif 1, as shown in diagram.  At intersections of corners of motifs, all sl st joinings should be worked in a shared ch.
(This joining can be observed in the photograph as a circle with 8 spokes radiating from the center.)

Motifs 3 through 15: Following diagram, join each consecutive motif an as many sides as necessary.

HALF-MOTIFS 16 THROUGH 19: Make four half-motifs to be joined on two sides each as shown in diagram.  Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.

Row 1: Ch 1, work 9 sc in ring.  Turn.

Row 2 : Ch 6 ( counts as dc,'ch3), skip next sc; * dc in next sc, ch 3, skip next sc; repeat from * across, dc in last dc ---- 4 ch-3 loops.  Turn.

Row 3: Starting puff st in first dc, ch 5. * puff st in next ch-3 loop, ch 5; repeat from * across,-end puff st io third ch of turning ch-6.  Turn.

Row 4: Ch 6 ( counts as dc, ch 3), * dc in center ch of next ch-5 loop, ch 3, dc in top of next puff st **, ch 3; repeat from * around, end last repeat at 8 ch-3 loops.  Turn.

Row 5: Ch 5, (counts as dc, ch2), * dc in center ch of next ch-3 loop, ch 2, ** dc in next dc, ch 2; repeat from * across, end last repeat at **, dc in third ch of turning ch---16 ch-2 spaces.  Turn.

Row 6: Work as for Rnd 6 of motif 1, forming four points.  Fasten off.  Turn.

Row 7: Join yarn at base of first puff st Row at right edge of first point, ch 13, sc in ch-3 at beg of next 2-puff-st Row, *ch 8, sc in top of single puff st at top of point, ch 8, sc in ch-3 at left edge of 2-puff-st Row**, ch 8, sc in ch-3 at right edge of 2-puff st Row on next point; repeat from * around, end last repeat at **, ch 13, sl st in sc at base of first Row of puff sts on last point.  Fasten off.  Turn.

Row 8: Join with sl st to fourth ch from last sc made on previous rnd, ch 13, *sc in fourth ch of next ch-8 loop, ch 8, sc in fifth ch of next ch-8 loop, ch 12; repeat from * across, work 1 more ch, join with sl st to fourth ch of last ch-loop.  Fasten off. Turn.

Row 9: Join yarn in 7th ch of ch-13 loop, ch 25 working joining in 13th ch of ch-25, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, * ch 13 working joining in 7th ch of ch-13, sc in fourth ch of next ch-8, ch 13 working joining in 7th ch of ch-13, sc in 6th ch of next ch-12, ch 13 working joining in 7th ch of ch-13, sc in fourth ch of next ch-8 loop, ch 13 working joining in 7th ch of ch-13**, sc in fourth ch of next ch-12, ch 25 working joining in thirteenth ch of ch-25-corner point made, sc in ninth ch of same ch-12 loop; repeat from * once more, end last repeat at **, sc in 4th ch of last ch-13 loop, sc in 7th ch of same loop.  Fasten off.

FINISHING: Work one Row of sc along top edge of shawl.  FRINGE: Cut 13" lenghts of yarn.  Knot ten strands, doubled, along each diagonal edge of shawl, spacing each set of fringe about 3" apart.

If you will draw triangles with the numbers in the center you can see how the Motifs are made.  Remember that 16 through 19 are half motifs.
