Men’s Diamond Sweater

SIZES: Men's small (medium-large). Garment measurement around underarms about 38 (42- 46)".

MAT'ERIALS: Knitting worsted weight-. yarn (3.5 oz. skeins)-7 (8-9) skeins medium blue (MC), 1 skein each powder blue (A), royal blue (B) and navy blue (C). Crochet hooks sizes H and I, OR Size needed to obtain gauge. Yarn Needle.

Gauge 3 sc = 1" on size I hook.

NOTE: Stripe Color Pattern and an important note follow below, preceding the actual starting instruction, for the back of sweater. Read both before starting.

STRIPE COLOR PATTFRN-For Small Size Only: work starting ch and first rnd with MC, then follow striping pat of (2 rows B, 2 rows C, 2 rows A, 2 rows MC) twice, end 2 rows B, 2 rows C-21 rnds.

For Medium Size Only: Work starting ch and first 2 rnds with A, then follow striping pat of (2 rows MC, 2 rows B, 2 Row rows A) twice, end 2 rows MC, -24 rnds.

Important Note: When working stripe color Pat, always work first rnd of 2-rnd stripe through back loops only of sts on previous rnd; work second, rnd of same stripe through both loops of sts on previous rnd.

FOR Medium size only BACK- Central Diamond referring to color pattern and note above, ch 4, join with Sl St to form a ring.

Rnd 1- Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring, join with Sl St to first st.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 3 sc in first sc-first Corner formed, 1 sc in next SC, (3 dc in next SC-next corner formed, 1 sc in next SC), 3 times, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: join new color in center sc of any 3-sc corner, ch 1, 3 sc in same sc, 1 sc in each of next sc to center sc of next 3-sc corner, (3 sc in next SC, 1 sc in each of next sc to center sc of next 3-sc corner) twice, end 3 sc in next sc, 1 SC in each of next sc to first sc of rnd, join with sl st to first st.

Rd 4: Ch 1, work1 sc in first sc, (3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next sc to center sc of next 3-sc corner) 3 times, end 3 sc in next sc, work 1 sc in each of next sc to first sc of rnd, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.

Repeat Rnds 3 and 4 until color pat has been completed-47 sc on each side; excluding corner sts.

FOR SMALL AND LARGE SIZES ONLY-BACK-Central Diamond: Referring to color pattern and Note above, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: Join new color in any sc, ch 1, work 3 sc in same sc-first corner formed, 1 sc in next sc, (3 sc in next sc-next corner formed, 1 sc in next sc) 3 times, join with sl st to first st.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in first sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next sc to center sc of next 3-sc corner, (3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next sc to center sc of next 3-sc corner) twice, end 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc to first sc of rnd, join with sl st to first st.

Fasten off. Rnd 4: Join new color in any center sc of 3-sc corner, 3 sc in same sc, (1 sc in each of next sc to center sc of next 3-sc corner, 3 sc in next sc) 3 times, 1 sc in each of next sc to first sc of rnd and join with sl st.

Repeat Rnds 3 and 4 until color pat for selected size has been completed-41 (47-53) sc on each side; excluding corner sts.

F0R ALL SIZES-Corners for central Diamond-Rnd 1: Starting in st following any corner sc, join MC and work 1 sc in each of 41(47-53) sc on this side of square. Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 2: Work first 2 sc tog (insert hook in first st, draw up a loop, insert hook in next st, draw up a loop, yo and through all 3 loops on hook), 1 sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, work last 2 sc tog-39(45-51) sc.

Repeat Row 2 until 3 sc remain, work 3 sc tog. Fasten off. Work corner, as above, on each of remaining 3 sides of Central Diamond.

Top Back: Join MC in any 3-sc tog st and work approximately 60 (66-72) sc evenly spaced across one side of com pleted square. Ch 1, turn. Work even in sc for 10 more rows. Fasten off.

FRONT: Work as for Back until first 2 rows of Top Back are completed.

Shape Neck-All Sizes: Mark center 12 sts of Row for neck. Work in sc to within2 sts of first center 12 st, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook-1 dec made. Ch 1, turn. Dec 1 st in same manner at neck edge only on each of next 3 rows, then dec 1 st at neck edge only on every other Row twice-6 decs made. Work even in sc on remaining sts until a total of 11 rows have been worked. Shape other side of neck to correspond.

SLEEVES-All Sizes: Work as for Medium size of Central Diamond until20 rnds have been worked-39 sc on each side of square, excluding corner st.

Top Sleeve-Row 1: With right side of work facing and starting in st following any corner sc, join MC and work 1 sc in each of 39 sc on this side of square. Ch1, turn.

Row 2: Work first 2 sc tog, work in sc to within last 2 sc, 2 sc tog. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until 3 sc remain, work 3 sc tog. Fasten off. Work another corner in same manner on adjacent-side of Central Diamond (see diagram).

Bottom Sleeve-Row 1: With right side of work facing, join MC in st following corner sc indicated by * on diagram, work (2 sc tog) twice, 1 sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, work 2 sc tog-36 sc. Ch 1, turn. Row 2: Work 2 sc tog, 1 sc in each sc across to last 4 sc, work (2 sc tog) twice-33 sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat

Rows 1 and 2 until 3 sts remain, work 3 sc tog. Fasten off.

With right side of work facing, join MC in st following corner sc indicated by and work remaining edge of Central Diamond as for edge just completed, reversing shaping.

Lower Edge of Sleeve-Row 1: With right side of work facing join MC in first sc at lower edge of sleeve as indicated by * * * on diagram, work 34 sts evenly spaced across. Ch 1, turn.

Rows2 and 3: Work 2 sc tog, 1 sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, 2 sc tog. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 4 through 6: Work even in sc. Ch1, turn.

Rows 5 and 7: Work as for Row2-26 sc. Fasten off. Work other sleeve in same manner.

NOTE: Ribbing at cuff will measure about 2" total length of sleeve from underarm, including cuff, should measure about 19". If a longer sleeve is desired, work additional rows- of SC along top edge of completed sleeve.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams. Position middle point of top edge of sleeve at shoulder seam and sew sleeve to body of sweater. Sew side and sleeve seams. Ribbing-Lower Edge of Sweater: With MC, ch 10, turn. Row 1: Starting in second ch from hook, work 1 sc in each ch across-9 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Working through back loops only, work 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until a total of113 (128-143) rows have been worked. Join two short ends of ribbing by working sc through sts on this Row and through foundation ch sts at same time, being careful not to twist ribbing. Fasten off.

Cuffs: Work as for lower edge ribbing or 28 rows and join ends in same manner.

Sew ribbing to lower edge of sweater and sleeves, positioning lower edge ribbing seam at back and cuff seams in line with sleeve seams.

Neck: With MC, ch 5, turn. Row 1: Starting in second ch from hook, work 1 sc in each ch across-4 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Working through back loops only, work 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat Row 2 until a total of 72 rows have been worked. Join ends of ribbing as for other ribbings. Sew ribbing to neck edge, positioning seam at back. Block sweater lightly.
