Row 1: 3 d c in 4th ch from hook, * skip 1 st, 4 d c in next st (d c group), ch 5, skip next 3 sts, 1 s c in next st, ch 5, skip next 3 sts, 4 d c in next st (d c group), repeat from * across row, ending skip 1 st, 4 d c in last st.

Row 2: Ch 3, turn, 3 d c in same st as turning ch, * skip next 6 dc, 4 d c in next d c, ch 5, 1 s c in next s c, ch 5, 4 d c in next d c (d c group), repeat from * across row, ending skip next 6 d c, 4 d c in last st (d c group).

Row 3: Repeat Row 2.

Row 4: Ch 7,turn, skip first 4 d c of first d c group, * 1 s c in space between 2 d c groups, ch 5, skip next 3 d c, 4 d c in next d c (last d c of d c group), skip next ch 5, 1 s c and next ch 5, 4 d c in next d c (first d c of d c group), ch 5, skip next 3 d c repeat from *  across row, ending 1 s c in space between next 2 d c groups, ch 5, skip next 3 d c, 1 d c in last st.

Rows 9 through 12: Repeat Rows 2 through 5.

Repeat Rows 6 through 12 for pattern st until piece measures 80 inches, ending with row 2 of pattern st. Fasten off.

FINISHING: With right side facing you, work 1row s c around edges of shawl, working 3 sc in corner sts.

FRINGE: Cut strands of yarn 17 inches long. Knot-30 strands in first space between 4 d c groups, and in each remaining space between 4 d c groups across each short end. Trim ends.
