Ch 172 sts.

Row 1: 1 d c in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, skip next st, 1 d c in next st, repeat from across row - 85 ch 1 spaces.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 1 d c in next d c (1 space dec), * ch 1, 1 d c in next d c, repeat from * across row to last 2 d c, y o, insert hook in next d c, y o and draw up a loop, y o, pull through 2 loops on hook, y o, insert hook in next d c, y o and draw up a loop, y o, pull through 2 loops on hook, y o, pull through all 3 loops on hook (1 space dec).

Continue to work in this manner, dec 1 space each end of EVERY ROW until 1 ch 1 space remains. Fasten off.

FINISHING: EDGING:

Round 1: With right side facing you and working on side of starting ch, join yarn in first st and work 3 s c in same st (corner st), 1 s c in each of 169 sts across neck edge, 3 s c in next st (corner st), 1 s c in each of next 89 sts on one shaped edge to st at point of shawl, 3 s c in same st, 1 s c in each of next 89 sts on other shaped edge, join.

Repeat this round until 3 inches have been worked in s c. Fasten off.

FRINGE:Cut strands of yarn 16 inches long. Knot 1 strand in every st around shaped edges of shawl. Trim ends.
