Afghan of Jewel Tones

SIZE: About 54" x 80", plus fringe.

MATERIALS: Knitting worsted, 4-oz. skeins: 2 skeins each of cerise, scarlet. dark purple, royal blue, and black; 1 skein each of magenta, light purple, teal blue, dark orange, light orange, light turquoise, dark turquoise, light violet, and dark yellow.

 Crochet hook size K.

GAUGE: 3 dc shell = 1".
Notes: Join each rnd with a sl st in top of ch 3. Cut yarn, pull end through lp on hook. Join new color with sl st. Work over ends of previous color and new color to hide them.
 

    AFGHAN: CENTER MOTIF:

With cerise, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as I dc), 11 dc in ring. Join; end off (see Notes).

Rnd 2: Join scarlet in sp between any 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same sp, *sk 3 dc, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next sp, repeat from* twice; join; end off.

Rnd 3: Join magenta in ch-l corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, 3 dc in next sp between shells of 3 dc, * 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next corner ch-l sp, 3 dc in next sp between shells, repeat from * twice, 3 dc in first
corner sp, ch 1; join; end off.

Rnd 4: Join light purple in ch-l corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, (3 dc in next sp) twice, *3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next corner ch-l sp, (3 dc in next sp) twice, repeat from * twice, 3 dc in first corner sp, ch 1; join; end off.

Rnds 5-12: Work as for rnd 4, using dark purple, royal blue, teal blue, black, dark orange, light orange, cerise, and scarlet in order, having 1 extra shell on each side each rnd.
 

    SMALL MOTIF:   Make 8 each

With dark turquoise, royal blue, dark purple, and cerise, work rnds 1-4 of center motif. small motifs the same. With light purple, dark turquoise, black, and dark purple, work 8 small motifs the same.

    Joining: Place small motifs around center motif, alternating colors, having cerise-edged motifs at corners. With loose sc, from wrong side, join small motifs tog, and join small motifs to center motif, using
colors to match one edge to be joined.
 

    STRIPED BORDER:

Rnd 1: Join black in any corner sp of large block just made. Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, * dc in next sp between dc's, repeat from * around, making 3 dc in each corner; join to top of ch 3; end off.

Rnd 2: Join light turquoise in sp between any 2 dc, ch 3, * dc in next sp, repeat from * around, making 2 dc in each of 2 sps at corners; join; end off.

Rnd 3: Join royal blue in sp between any 2 dc, ch 3, * dc in next sp, repeat from * around, making 3 dc in each corner; join; end off.

Rnd 4: With light violet, repeat rnd

Rnd 5: With light purple, repeat rnd 3.
 

    MEDIUM MOTIF:   Make 12 each

With dark yellow, dark orange, light orange, cerise, and scarlet, work rnds 1-5 of center motif.
    Make 12 each
With cerise, scarlet, magenta, light purple, and dark purple.

    Joining: Place medium motifs around striped border, alternating colors, having scarlet-edged motifs at corners. Join motifs tog and join motifs to striped border with sc.
 

    STRIPED BORDER:

Rnd 1: Join black in any sp between 2 dc. Ch 3, * dc in next sp, repeat from * to sp before first corner shell, sk first corner shell, make 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in corner, sk 2nd corner shell, repeat from first * around. Join; end off.

Rnds 2-5: Repeat rnd I with scarlet, dark purple, royal blue, and teal blue.
 

    END MOTIF:
    Make 8 motifs the same.  With black, teal blue, dark purple, light turquoise, royal blue, and
light violet, work rnds 1-6 of center motif.

    Make 6 motifs the same.  With light turquoise, teal blue, dark turquoise, dark purple, black, and
royal blue

    Joining: Place 7 motifs across each end of afghan, alternating colors. Join motifs tog and to striped border with sc.
 

    END BORDER:
Row 1: From right side, join dark purple in corner sp at top edge of afghan; ch 3, dc in each sp between dc's across top edge. End off.

Row 2: Join scarlet in sp between ch 3 and first dc of Row 1, ch 3, dc in each sp between dc's across. End off.

Row 3: With cerise, work as for Row 2.   Make same border at bottom of afghan.
 

    FINISHING: Join black in any sp between 2 dc on edge. Ch 3, * dc in next sp, repeat from * around, working 3 dc in each corner of afghan. Run in all yarn ends. Steam-press afghan lightly.

Fringe: Wind yarns of all colors around cardboard or book 9" long. Cut at one end. Using 3 strands tog, fold strands in half, pull folded ends through sp at one end of afghan, pull 6 ends through loop; tighten knot. Knot 6 ends tog below first knot. Knot fringe in every other sp along top and bottom of afghan.
