Granny Square Sweater

      

If you think granny squares are for Afghans only, you’re in for a big surprise. You can make them into sweaters, rugs, pillows and more. And grannies aren’t just squares – they come in a variety of shapes.

Directions are the same for Sizes Small (Size G hook), Medium (Size H hook) and Large (Size 1 hook). Sweater size is achieved by crochet hook size and by maintaining the gauge below.

MATERIALS: Reynolds Kitten (1 ¾ -oz. ball): 5 (5,6) balls of No. 47 Rose (A), 8 (8, 9) balls of No. 59 Ecru (B) and 2 (2, 3) balls of No. 74 Lt.Green, (C); crochet hook in above sizes, OR ANY SIZE HOOK TO OBTAIN GAUGE BELOW; tapestry needle; safety pins.

Note: Gauge is given for diagonal measurement of Square or Triangle GAUGE: For Small Size with Size G hook-Square = 3 ¾ ". For Medium Size with Size H hook-Square = 4". For Large Size with Size 1 hook-Square = 4 ¼ ". BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

Note.- To attach yarn with sc, make slip knot on hook in specified st and draw up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook.

FIRST SQUARE

Rnd1, Rosebud (right side): With A, ch 1 loosely, ch 1 more, 8 sc in 2nd'ch from hook. Draw up last lp about 1"; drop lp for now. 1t will be picked up after Rnd 2 is completed to finish Rosebud. Weave in beg A yarn end.

Note.- Work next rnd in back lps only, keeping dropped A lp and A yarn at front of work.

Rnd 2.- From right side, attach B with sc to 7th sc, ch 2-corner-sp made; working over beg B yarn end, sc in same sc, * sc in next sc; in next sc work; sc, ch 2, sc; rep from * twice, sc in last sc. Join with sl st to both lps of first sc. Fasten off.

Finish Rosebud: Pick up dropped A lp and draw out slack, loosely sl st in front of each of the 8 sc of Rnd 1. Join with sl st to both lps of first sl st. Fasten off.

Rnd 3. With C, make slip knot on hook; from wrong side, insert hook in center-sc bet any two corner-sps, loosely draw up a lp, * (yo, loosely draw up a lp in same st) twice, yo and through all 6 lps on hook- puff-st made; ch 4, loosely draw up a lp in center-sc bet next two comer-sps; rep from * around, ending with ch-4. Join with sl st to top of first puff-st-A puff-sts. Fasten off. Note: Work next rnd in B rnd unless otherwise stated, keeping all ch-4 lps at back of work.

Rnd 4. Attach B with sc in any corner-sp, ch 2, working over beg yarn end, sc in same sp, * sc in next sc, sc in top of puff-st, sc in next sc, keeping puff-st at front of work; in next corner-sp, work: sc, ch 2, sc; rep from * around, ending with sc in sc after last puff-st. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 5. From wrong side, attach A with sl st in any corner-sp, ch 4 (counts as first hdc andch-2 sp); working over beg A yarn end, hdc in same sp, * sc in next sc, (dc in next sc, sc in next sc) twice; in next corner-sp work: hdc, ch 2, hdc; rep from * around, ending with sc in last sc before start. Join with sl st to 2nd ch. Fasten off.

Rnd 6. From right side, attach B with sl st in any corner-sp, ch 3, sl st in same sp, * (ch 2, sk next st, sl st in next sc) 3 times, ch 2, sk next st; in corner sp work: sl st, ch 3, sl st; rep from * around, ending with sl st in 2nd st from start, ch 2. Join with sl st to first sl st. Fasten off. Weave in rem yarn ends.

SECOND SQUARE: Rep Rnds 1 through 5 of First Square.

Rnd 6: (joining rnd)-Note: Work all joining from right side and refer to FIG. 1): From right side, attach B with sl st in any corner-sp, ch 1, remove hook, now join Second Square to First Square on one edge:

Insert hook in center-ch of any corner-lp of First Square, pick up dropped lp and draw through ch, ch 1, sl st in same corner-sp of Second Square, continue joining in direction of arrow (see FIG. 1), * Ch 1, remove hook, insert hook through next ch-2 lp of First Square, pick up dropped lp and draw through lp, ch 1, sk next st of Second Square, sl st in next sc; rep from *' 3 times, ending with sl st in next corner-sp of Second Square, ch 1, remove hook; insert hook in center-ch of next corner-lp of First Square, pick up dropped lp and draw through ch 1, sl st in same corner-sp of Second Square. Complete Second Square as for Rnd 6 of First Square, Continue to work additional Squares as for Second Square.

 

ASSEMBLY- Note: Referring to fig 3, assemble sweater in the following order. White Squares: Work and join all white squares shown in fig 3 same as Second square, except begin the joining of each square in whichever corner is necessary to achieve the given layout. When joining a square on more than one edge, rep joining as for first edge. When joining to a previously joined corner, join to the ch where previous join was made. Fold Sweater: Keeping right side out, fold sweater in half, matching lower edges. Pin corners of squares tog, matching edges numbered 1 through 4 to corresponding edges.

Underarm Squares and Folded Squares-Note: When joining underarm squares and folded squares, follow instructions for Joining Squares on All Edges. Work and join two underarm squares, joining edges numbered 5 and 6 to corresponding edges. Work and join all folded squares.

Joining Squares on All Edges (see FIG.2).Work Square through Rnd 5.

Rnd 6. From right side, attach B with sl st in any corner-sp, ch 1, remove hook; insert hook in center-ch of Corner-Loop 1, then insert hook in center- ch of Corner-Loop 2, pick up dropped lp and draw through both corner-ch's, ch 1, sl st in same corner-sp of Center Square, continue joining in direction of Arrow A. Join next corner to joining-ch of Comer 3, continuing to join in direction of Arrow B. Join next corner to Corners 4 and 5, joining same as Corners 1 and 2, continuing to join in direction of Arrow C. Join next corner to joining-ch of Corner 6, continuing to join in direction of Arrow D, then end by joining with sl st to first sl st of Center Square.

TRIANGLE

Note: Use B throughout. Do not remove markers until indicated

Rnd 1 (right side): Ch 2, 3 sc in 2ndch from hook.

Rnd 2: Ch 2 loosely (counts as first hdc), turn, sc in first sc, in next sc work: sc, ch 2, sc-corner made; in last sc work sc and hdc.

Rnd 3: Ch 2 loosely, turn, sc in first hdc, sc in each of next 2 sc; in corner-sp work: sc, ch 2, sc; sc in each of next 2 sc, in 2ndch work sc and hdc.

Rnd 4: Ch 2 loosely and mark last ch made, turn, sc in first hdc, (dc in next sc, sc in next sc) twice; in corner-sp work: hdc, ch 2, hdc; (sc in next sc, dc in next sc) twice, in 2ndch work sc and hdc. Note: Join triangle in next rnd referring to FIG. 1. All joining is worked from right side.

Rnd 5: Ch 2, mark first ch of ch-2 just made, remove hook, insert hook in joining-ch at Corner 1, pick up dropped lp and draw through ch, ch 1, turn Triangle to right side, sl st in first hdc of Triangle, ch 1, remove hook. Joining continues in direction of Arrow A. insert hook through next ch-2 lp of Square, pick up dropped lp and draw through lp, ch 1, sl st in next sc of Triangle, * ch 1, remove hook, insert hook through next ch-2 lp of Square, pick up dropped lp and draw through lp, ch 1, sk next st of Triangle, sl st in next sc *; rep from * to * twice, ending with sl st in corner- sp of Triangle, ch 1, remove hook; insert hook in joining-ch at Corner 2, pick up dropped lp and draw through ch, ch 1, sl st in same corner-sp of Triangle. Joining continues in direction of Arrow B; rep from * to * 3 times, ch 1, remove hook, insert hook through last ch-2 lp of Square, pick up dropped lp and draw through lp, ch 1, sl st in marked-ch of Triangle, remove marker, ch 1, remove hook; insert hook in joining-ch of Corner 3, pick up dropped lp and draw through ch, ch 1, sl st in same ch of Triangle where last sl st was worked; working across long edge of Triangle (ch 2, sk next Row, st st in next Row) twice, ch 2, sk center foundation-ch, sl st in next Row, ch 2, sk next Row, sl st in next Row, ch 2, sk next Row, join with sl st to marked-ch, remove marker-5 ch-2 lps made on long edge of Triangle. Fasten off.

NECK- Note: When working in joining-ch, work in the ch where the comers of Triangles or Squares were joined From right side, attach B with sl st io joining-ch at center back of neck, * (ch 1, sl st in next ch-2 lp) 5 times, ch 1, sl st in joining-ch *; ** rep from * to * once, (ch 1, sl st in next ch-2 lp) 4 times, ch 1, sl st in joining-ch; rep from ** once; rep from * to * twice. Join last ch-1 with sl st to first sl st. Do not fasten off.

Neck Ribbing-Note.- Neck Ribbing is joined to the neck edge at the same time that you wok it.

Row 1: Ch 11, st st in back lp of 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to 6nd-10 sl sts; turn to wrong side by turning the neck edge, located to right of ribbing, toward you; draw up a lp in back lp of each of next 2 sts on neck edge, draw First lp on hook through next 2 lps n hook-dec made.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn to right side by turning the neck edge, located to left of ribbing, toward you; sk dec, sl st in back lp of each of next 10 sl sts.

Row 3. Ch 1, draw slack from turning-ch to tighten the ch, turn to wrong side by turning the neck edge located to right of ribbing, toward you; sl st in back lp of each of next 10 sl sts; draw up a lp in back lp of each of next 2 sts on neck edge, draw first lp on hook through next 2 lps on hook-dec made. Rep Rows 2 and 3 around neck edge, ending with Row 2. Last Row: Ch 1, turn to wrong side by turning the neck edge, located to right of ribbing, toward you; sl st in back lp of each ribbing st; ch 1, cut yarn 15" from work, pull on last lp drawing yarn end through last ch.

Sew Ends of Ribbing Tog: Using 15" strand, sew ends tog from wrong side with overcast stitch as follows: On foundation edge, sew through single lp of each ch at edge; on the other edge, sew through front lp of each st. Sew Edge of Ribbing to Wrong Side: Turn sweater to wrong side. Turn ribbing to wrong side and evenly pin edge of ribbing just up to the ridge formed by the unworked lps of neck edge Row. Using overcast stitch, loosely sew a single lp at end of rib to a lp of neck edge Row, then sew a single lp bet ribs to next lp of neck edge Row. Continue sewing around in this manner.

Lower Edge: From right side, attach B with sl st to joining-ch of one side,* (ch 2, sl st in next ch-2 lp) 5 times, ch 2, sl st in joining-ch; rep from * around. Join last ch-2 with sl st to first sl st.

Ribbing- Row 1: Ch11, sl st in back lp of 2ndch from hook and in each ch to end-10 sl sts made; turn to wrong side by turning the lower edge, located to right of ribbing, toward you; draw up a lp in back lp of each of next 2 sts on lower edge, draw First tp on hook through next 2 lps on hook-dec made. Rep Rows 2 and 3 of neck ribbing around lower edge, ending with Row 2. Last Row: Work same as neck. Sew ends of ribbing tog same as neck.

SLEEVE: Lay sweater flat with back facing up. On each sleeve, mark the joining-ch indicated by dot in FIG. 3, page 102. From right side, attach B with sl st to marked st, * (ch 1, sl st in next ch-2 lp, ch 2, sl st in next ch-2 lp) twice, ch 1, sl st in next lp, ch 2, sl st in next joining-ch; rep from * around. Join last ch-2 with sl st to first sl st.

Sleeve Ribbing-Row 1: Ch 14, sl st in back lp of 2ndch from hook and in each ch to end-13 sl sts made; turn to wrong side by turning the sleeve edge, located to right of ribbing, toward you; draw up a lp in back lp of each of next 3 sts on sleeve edge, draw first lp on hook through next 3 lps on hook-dec made.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn to right side by turning the sleeve edge, located to left of ribbing toward you; sk dec, sl st in back lp of each of next 13 sl sts.

Row 3: Ch 1, draw slack from turning-ch to tighten the ch, turn to wrong side by turning the sleeve edge, located to right of ribbing, toward you; sl st in back lp of each of next 3 sts on sleeve edge, draw first lp on hook through next 3 lps on hook- dec made. Rep Rows 2 and 3 around, ending with Row 2. Last Row: Work same as neck. Sew ends of ribbing tog same as neck.
