Gem Afghan

EASY 
Crochet a "gem" of an afghan!  Diamond shaped granny square motifs are crocheted separately, then together in strips.  The afghan is completed by weaving the strips together.
The finished sewing the strips afghan measures approximately 57 x 63 inches.

   You will need Coats & Clark's Red Heart 4 ply hand knitting yarn in the following colors and amounts: 8 skeins Robin Blue, 4 skeins Skipper Blue and 3 skeins Emerald.  Red Heart 4 ply yarn is available in 3 ½ ounce skeins.
Also needed are a size H crochet hook, or size necessary to obtain given gauge, and a large eye yarn needle.

Gauge: 4 dc equal 1 inch.

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
Note:  Ch 3 at beginning of each rnd counts as first dc throughout.
MOTIF:  (Make 35 Skipper Blue, 24 Emerald) Ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, work 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times.  Join with sl st to top of starting ch.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in each of next 2 dc, *in corner work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc.
Repeat from * twice, end with 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in last corner, join with sl st to top of starting ch.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in each of next 4 dc, *in corner work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, dc in each of next 7 dc.  Repeat from * twice, end with 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in last corner, dc in each of next 2 dc. Join with sl St to top of starting ch.

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in each of next 6 dc, *in corner work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, dc in each of next 11 dc.  Repeat from * twice, end with comer in last corner, dc in each of next 4 dc.  Join with sl St to top of starting ch.  Fasten off.

STRIP 1: (Make 5) Use 7 Skipper Blue motifs for each stripe.  Always join motifs with right side facing.
Rnd 1: Join Robin Blue in any corner of motif, ch 3, in same sp work dc, ch 2, 2 dc, *dc in each of 15 dc to next corner, in corner work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, dc in each of next 15 dc to next corner, 2 dc in corner; pick up next motif and work 2 dc in any corner - joining corner, 2 motifs joined.  Repeat from * until a total of 6 motifs have been joined.  Join 7th motif as prior motifs were joined, **work dc in each of 15 dc to next corner, work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, in corner.  Repeat from twice, work 15 dc on remaining edge of 7th motif, 2 dc in last corner of motif dc now worked on all edges of 7th motif. ***Work 2 dc in corner of next motif (in same corner where underside joining was made), 15 dc to next corner, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in corner, 15 dc to next corner, 2 dc in corner.

Repeat from *** across remaining side of stripe - 7 motifs, positioned as diamonds, now joined.  Join with sl St to top of starting ch.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc to corner, in comer work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, dc in each of next 19 dc, *in corner work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, dc in each of next 17 dc, sk 2 dc, joining corner, and 2 dc on next motif, dc in each of next 17 dc.  Repeat from * until 6 motifs have been completed.  Continue all around 7th motif as before, then across remaining edge of stripe same as first side. Join with sl St to top of starting ch.  Fasten off.

STRIP 2: (Make 4) Use 6 Emerald motifs for each stripe.  Using Robin Blue,
join in the same manner as Strip 1.

Finishing: Assembling Stripes:
Beginning with Strip 1, placing motif corners into open corners of next stripe, alternate Strips 1 and 2 until all 9 strips are in place.  Whipstitch pieces together.

Embroidery: With large eye yarn needle and Skipper Blue, work lazy daisy stitches as follows in center of each motif- from center work one stitch to each corner on
Rnd 1; from center work one stitch to middle of each side edge of Rnd 1 - 8 lazy daisy stitches at center of each motif.

*
