Diagonal Strip Afghan

convert to knitting
   Thanks ANGELA S   DeARSILLS@

I usually use size H or G crochet hook.  1 square = approximately 1”.

The amount of knitting worsted used depends on the size of the afghan wanted. For 50” x 62” it takes approximately 7 - 8 ounce skeins.  Different weight yarns can be used but with the smaller yarns you need to use smaller hooks.

Chain 6, in the fourth chain from the hook do one double crochet (DC), repeat twice for a total of 3 DC.

Chain 6, in the fourth chain from the hook do one double crochet (DC), repeat twice for a total of 3 DC, then turn the square so that you slip stitch in the chain 3 space.  Chain 3, do 3 DC in the space.

You should have two squares in this Row.

Each Row is started with chain 6, in the fourth chain from the hook do one double crochet (DC), repeat twice for a total of 3 DC, then turn the square so that you slip stitch in the chain 3 space.  Chain 3, do 3 DC in the space till the end of the Row.  Each Row you will add one square/

Repeat this until the afghan is the width that you want.  If you want it to be 36” by 48” then you will keep adding on squares until you have 36 and then you make the edge straight by doing the following.  You will slip stitch across each stitch so that there are four slip stitches.  Then chain 3, 3dc
in the space, slip stitch in the chain 3 space.

When you get to 48” you will then slip stitch in the four stitches on each side of the afghan.  You will keep decreasing until you are down to one square like you started with.

If you want stripes decide how many rows of each stripe and do you pattern.  Just remember that the stripes will be like stair steps and will be on the diagonal of the afghan.  Four rows per color works well.  A variegated yarn is very pretty or variegated combing with solid colors of the same colors.

For the edge you can leave it the way it is or you can finish it off by putting on scallops or cut fringe or looped fringe.
