Crayon Cardigan

Instructions are for size 8, Changes for sizes 10 and 12 are in ( ).

 Materials: bulky weight yarn (2oz. ball) - 11 (12-13) White (A), 1 each Blue, Gold, Red and Green for embroidery; 

size K aluminum afghan hook or size for gauge,

 tapestry needle; 

separating zipper to fit front edge. 

Gauge: 3 sts = 1. 

Finished chest measurement: 29¼  (32 -33¼)”. 

Afghan Stitch; Ch desired length. 

Row 1: Draw up a lp in 2nd ch from hook and retain on hook, *draw up lp in next ch and retain on hook; repeat from * across. Work off lps as follows: Yo, draw through 1 lp, * yo, draw through 2 lps; repeat from * across until 1 lp remains on hook. 

Row 2: (lp on hook is counted as first st). * insert hook horizontally under next vertical bar, draw up a lp and retain on hook; repeat from * , ending draw up a lp in end st. Work off lps as for Row 1. Repeat Row 2 for pattern. 

BACK: With A and afghan hook, ch 44 (48-50). Work even in afghan st until piece measures 10 (10½ - 11)” or desired length to underarm. 

Shape Armholes: Sk first st, sl st in 3 sts, work to within last 3 sts; work off lps - 38 (42 - 44) sts. Work even until armhole measures 5½ (6 - 6½)”. 

Shape Shoulders: Leave off 4 sts each end of next 2 rows, then 4 (5-5) sts each end of next Row. Sl st in rem'g 14 (16-16) sts loosely. 

Left Front: With A and afghan hook, ch 22 (24-25). Work as for Back to underarm. 

Shape armhole: Leave off 3 sts at arm edge once. Work even on 19 (21 - 22) sts until armhole measures 3 ¾ (4 - 4½). 

Shape Neck: Work to within last 3 sts, work off lps. Dec 1 st at neck edge every other Row 4 (5 - ) times. (To dec - insert hook through 2 vertical bars and draw up 1 lp. Work dec's 1 st in from edge of work.  Work even on 12 (13 -14) sts until armhole measures same as back to shoulder. 

Shape Shoulder: Leave off 4 sts at arm edge every Row twice, 4 (5-6) sts once. 

Right Front:  Work to correspond to Left Front, reversing shaping. 

Sleeves: With A and afghan hook, ch 34 (36-38). Work even in afghan St until piece measures 13 (14 - 15)”, or desired length. Sl st in each bar loosely. 

 

Trim; Cross-stitches are embroidered in the space formed between 2 vertical bars. Make sure all cross-stitches cross in same direction. Place end st of first motif on first Row in 3rd space from front edge. Repeat chart up front edge. Skip 4 (6-6) spaces toward side seam and work motifs to match first Row of motifs to underarm. In center with Red, work 2 rows of chain sts (work in space on either side of center vertical bar) as follows; With yarn coming from underneath and hook on top, work a sI st In each Row, being careful not to draw in. Alternating colors, embroider 3 (5-5) motifs evenly spaced across lower back and 3 motifs across lower edge of each sleeve.        

Finishing: Sew shoulder seams. Sew straight edge of sleeve to straight edge of armhole, omitting armhole bind-off; sew side edge of sleeve to armhole bind-off. Sew under-sleeve and side seams. With A and afghan hook, sc around neck edge, taking in slightly to fit. Work 2 rows of sc around neck end fasten off. Being careful not to draw in, with A, work 1 Row of sl sts along each front edge, With A, work 1 Row of sI st around each sleeve edge. 

DO NOT PRESS. Wet with cold water; lay on a towel. Dry away from heat and sun. Sew in zipper. Tie 2 strands of Red through the hole in The zipper pull.
