MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44:2 balls of No. 76-A Aqua.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 0.

A few pearls and a pearl drop.

Starting at center of crown, ch 2.

1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around.

3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc (f sc increased). Repeat from * around.

4th rnd: Sc in each sc around, increasing 6 sc evenly around.

Repeat 4th rnd until piece measures 7 ½ inches in diameter. Join last rnd with a sl st.

Now work side as follows:

1st rnd: Working in back loop only, sc in each sc around. Join. Joining is back of hat, place a pin as marker at opposite side of piece to mark front.

2nd rnd: Sc in each sc to marker, in next sc make sc, ch 1 and sc; sc in each remaining sc. Join.

3rd to 7th rnds incl: Sc in each sc to within the sc, ch 1 and sc at front, skip the first sc of this group, in ch-1 sp make sc, ch 1 and sc; skip 2nd sc of group, sc in each remaining sc around..Join.

8th rnd: Sc in each sc around to within sc preceding group at center, half dc in next sc, 2 dc in the first sc of group, 3 tr in ch-1 sp, 2 dc in next sc, half dc in next sc, sc in each remaining sc around. Join.

9th rnd: Sc in each st around, making 3 sc in center tr at front..Join.

10th md: Sl st in each sc around. Join and break off.

 

Dent crown slightly and sew in place. Sew pearls and drop to hat.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0.

GAUGE: 3 group sts (stretched) make l 1/8 inches.

Starting at center of crown, ch 4.

1st rnd: 15 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join (this is center back).

2nd rnd: Ch 2, insert hook in same place as sl st, draw loop through, thread over, insert hook in same place, draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (puff st made), * skip 1 dc, make a puff st in next dc. Repeat from * around, sl st in first puff st. Ch 2, turn.

3rd rnd: Make a puff st in same place as sl st, * puff st in next puff st. puff st in next ch (1 puff st increased), puff st in next puff st. Repeat from * around. Join. Ch 2, turn (12 puff sts).

4th and 5th rnds: Inc 4 puff sts evenly around. Join. Ch 2, turn.

6th md: Work without increasing. Join. Ch 2, turn.

7th rnd: Inc 10 puff sts evenly around. Join. Ch 2, turn.

8th to 13th rnds incl: Repeat 6th and 7th rnds alternately 3 more times. Work without increasing until piece measures 5 inches from point of crown. Join and break off.

Turn and work short rows as follows:

1st Row: Attach thread to 8th puff st from center back, ch 2, work in pattern around to 8th puff st on other side of center back, ch 2, sl st in next puff st. Break off and turn.

2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Attach thread to 2nd puff st, ch 2, work in pattern across to within last 2 puff sts, ch 2, sl st in next puff st. Break off.

Next rnd: Attach thread to center back, ch 2, work in pattern st around. Join. Following md: Sc closely around. Join. s1 st in each st around. Join and break off.

BOW · · · Cut 21 strands of thread, each 20 inches long. Divide strands into 3 groups and make a braid. Wind a piece of thread 1 ½ inches from each end, tie securely. Fray ends to form a fringe. Shape into a bow and sew to back of hat.

CROWN · · · Starting at center, ch 2. 1st rnd: 10 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st to first sc.

2nd rnd: Ch 3, working directly behind the ch-3 just made, make dc in the sc preceding sl st, * dc in next sc following sl st, dc directly behind the dc just made into the preceding sc (crossed dc made). Repeat from * around, ending with dc in same place as first dc and in preceding sc. Join to top of ch-3.

3rd and 4th rnds: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * 2 sc in next dc. sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join.

5th rnd: Ch 1, sc in each sc around..Join.

6th rnd: Ch 3. dc directly behind the ch-3 just made in the sc preceding the sl st, · skip next sc following sl st, dc in next sc, dc directly behind the dc just made into the skipped sc (another crossed dc made). Repeat from * around..Join to top of ch-3.

7th md: Repeat 3rd md.

8th and 9th rnds: Repeat 5th rnd.

10th to 13th rnds incl: Repeat 6th to 9th rnds incl once more.

14th md: Repeat 6th rnd.

15th md: Ch 1, sc in each dc around. Join.

16th and 17th rnds: Repeat 5th rnd. Repeat last 4 rnds until piece measures 5 ¼ inches front center top of Crown.

BRIM . · · 1st rnd: * Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next se. Repeat from * around.. join.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join.

Repeat 2nd rnd until Brim measures 1 ½ inches.

Next rnd: Sc at base of each sc around. Join and break off.
