Cowgirl's Vest

 Instructions are for size 4, Changes for sizes 6 and 8 are in ( ).

 Materials worsted weight  (4-oz. skeins) - 1 each Gold Dust (A), Clay  (B), Burnt Orange (C) and Gold  (D), few yds. each tan (E) and Wood Brown ( F); size.

"H" crochet hook or size for Gauge; size G crochet hook, 1½" piece cardboard. 

Gauge; 3 sts = 1'; 2 dc rows = 1"; 4 Sc rows = 1". 

Finished chest measurements: 26 (28-30)". 

Back:

With double strand of A and larger hook, ch 38 (4246), dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Work 2 rows dc. 

Shape Armholes  

Row 1: Turn, sI st in 4 (5-6) dc, ch 2, dc in next and each dc across to within 3 (4-5) dc of end. 

Row 2; Ch 2, turn, (yo, draw up a lp in next dc, yo and through 2 lps) twice, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook-dec made. Dc in each dc to within last 2 dc, work dec over last 2 dc, 

Rows 3 and 4: Rep Row 2. Work even in sc on 24 (26 - 28) sts until armhole measures 4½ (5 - 5½)". 

Shape Shoulders

Row 1; Turn, sI st in 4 (5-5) sts, ch 1, sc in same st; sc in each st to within last 3 (4-4) sts. 

Row 2 Turn, sI st in 4 sc, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each sc to within last 3 sts; fasten off, 

Right Front; With double strand of A and larger hook, ch 19 (21-22). Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Work 2 rows dc.

Shape Armhole and Neck; Turn, sI st in 4 (5-6) dc, ch 2, dc in next dc and in each dc to within last 2 dc, dec over last 2 dc. 

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Dc in each dc to within last 2 dc, dec over last 2 dc. 

Row 3: Ch 2, turn, dec over next 2 dc, dc across, dec'g over last 2 dec. 

Row 4; Rep Row 2. Working in sc, cont to dec 1 st at neck edge every other Row 3 times more. Work, even on 6 (7-7) sc until piece measures same as Back to shoulder, ending at side edge. 

Shape Shoulder: Turn, sI st in 4 (5-5) sc, ch 1, sc n same sc and 2 rem'g sc; fasten off. 

Left Front: Work as for Right Front, reversing shaping. 

Body; Sew shoulder, and side seams, Right side facing, attach double strand of B at Left Front edge, ch 2, * in next st, work 3 dc, ch 1, 1 dc; skip 3 sts. Rep from * end last rep, skip 3 (3-1) sts, dc in last st, 

Rows 2 - 9 (10 - 11), Turn, ch 2, * in next ch-1 sp, work 3 dc, ch 1, 1 dc. Rep from * across, end dc in top of turning ch. 

Row 10 (11-12) Turn, sl st in first 2 dc and in ch-1 sp, ch 2. in same sp, work 2 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, Work pattern across as established. Do not dc in top of turning ch. Fasten off. 

FLOWER (make 2): With single strand of E and smaller hook, ch 5, join to form ring.

Rnd. 1; Ch 2, 23 dc in ring; join to top of ch 2. 

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in joining, * ch 3, skip 3 dc, sc in next dc. Rep from * around, end ch 3, sk 3 dc, join in first sc. 

Rnd 3: Attach single strand of F in any ch 3 lp: in each ch-3 lp, work sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc; fasten off. 

Leaves (make 4): With single strand of C and smaller hook, ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook,  hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 5 chs, hdc in next ch; in last ch, work sc, ch 1, sc. Working along opposite side of ch, work hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 5 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in next. Join to first ch; fasten off. 

Finishing: Attach double strand of A at beg of left front neck shaping. Keeping work flat, with larger hook, sc around neck edge. Working in dc cont around front and bottom edge, inc'g to keep corners rounded. Rep with C. Sew flowers and leaves in place, With C, make ch-st stems; sew in place as shown. 

Fringe: Work loop st around edge of vest and around armholes as follows: Attach double strand D. With larger hook, * holding cardboard at back at work, insert hook in next st, wind yarn around card­board from back to front, yo hook and draw through st, yo and draw through first lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hook. Rep from *  around, join to first st; fasten off.
