Boy's and Girl's Vests

Size 14 to 16

Needles--1 pair American Standard No. 3 and 5.

Materials--Knitting Worsted, 4 ply, 10 ounces. 4 leather or wooden buttons. Gauge--5 sts to 1 inch.

BOY'S VEST Back--With No. 3 needles, cast on 86 sts (90 sts, size 16). K 1 st, P 1 st, for 3 inches.

Change to No. 5 needles, P 2 (P 4, size 16), * K 4, P 2, repeat from * across row, ending row with P 2 (P 4, size 16).

Next Row, K 2, (K 4, size 16) *P 4, K 2, repeat from *across row, end with K2 (K 4, size 16).

Repeat these 2 rows for 12 inches from beg (12 ½  size 16).

Bind off 5 sts at beg of the next 2 rows, bind off 2 sts at beg of of every row, until you have 12 sts off on each side, 62 sts.

Work even for 10 inches ( 102 inches, size 16 ), measuring straight up from where the 5 sts were bound off.

Bind off 6 sts at beg of the next 6 rows, bind off remaining 26 sts for back of neck.

Left Front--With No. 3 needles, cast on 54 sts (56 sts, size 16), K 1 st, P 1 st for 3 inches.

Put first 10 sts on st holder (to be worked later for ribbing).

With No. 5 needles, K 2, *P 4, K 2, repeat from *across row ending row K 2 (K 4, size 16).

Next Row, P 2 (P 4, size 16), *K 4, P 2, repeat from *across row, end row, P 2.

Repeat these 2 rows until you have 7 rows, on 8th row, work cable over first and every other K 4 rib as follows: Sl first 2 sts to double pointed needle, hold in back of work, then K 2 sts, K 2 sts from double pointed another cable, twist over 2nd and every other rib of K 4 across row.

Work 7 rows even.

Work even in this manner to underarm.

Dec at armhole edge same as for back and K 2 tog at beg of every 3rd row at neck edge, until you have 18 sts.

Work even on 18 sts until armhole measures same as for back.

Bind off 6 sts at beg of every row at shoulder edge 3 times.

Work Right Front to correspond.

Border--With No. 3 needles, continue with 10 K I, P 1 sts from st holder and work buttonholes as follows: Starting yarn at inside of border, P 1, Kl, Pl, bind off 3, K1, P1, K1, P 1.

On next row, cast on 3 sts over those bound off.

Work buttonhole every 22 inches, 3 more times.

Continue border until piece measures around sweater after sewing shoulder seams. When sewing on border, stretch or bind off and sew to border sts at front.

Armholes--With No. 3 needles, pick up 120 sts, K 1, P 1 for ¾ inches, bind off K 1, P 1.

GIRL'S VEST

Back--With No. 3 needles, cast on 86 sts, K 5 rows.

Change to No. 5 needles, work same as for back of Boy's Sweater.

Right Front--With No. 3 needles, cast on 50 sts, (52 sts, size 16), K 5 rows in garter st, K first 6 sts, put on st holder (to be K later).

With No. 5 needles, P 2, *K 4, P 2, repeat from *across row ending P 2 (P 4, size 16).

Next Row, K 2, *P 4, K 2, repeat from *across row, ending K 2.

Repeat these 2 rows and work pattern same as for boy's.

Work Left Front to correspond, casting on 6 sts less, the border will be continued from right front.

Border---With No. 3 needles, continue with the 6 K sts from st holder and work buttonhole 1 ½ inches from bottom as follows: K 2, bind off 2, K 2.

On next row, cast on 2 sts over those bound off.

Work buttonhole every 2 ½ inches, 3 more times.

Finish sweater same as boy's.
