These directions are for 6 months size.  Changes for 12 months size are in parentheses.

MATERIALS

BERNAT Pompadour (1 oz. pull skeins) - 4(5) 1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 1 and 3 

6 small buttons
1 ½ yds  ½ inch satin ribbon
GAUGE: 7 sts = 1 inch          10 rows = 1 inch

CARDIGAN:

BACK: Using No. 1 needles, cast on 70 (74) sts.

K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 1 (1 ½) inches. 

Change to No. 3 needles and * work in stockinette st for 2 inches. 

K the next 4 rows (2 ridges). 

Repeat from * once more.

Work in stockinette st until piece measures 6 ½ (7) inches.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 2 (3) sts. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row twice.  **Work even in stockinette st on 62 (64) sts until stockinette st stripe measures 2 inches above last garter st stripe. 

Work in garter st for 6 rows (3 ridges). 

Repeat from ** until armholes measure 3 ½ (4) inches.  

SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 9 sts. 

Bind off remaining 26 (28) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Using No. 1 needles, cast on 35 (39) sts.

Row 1: (wrong side) K 2, P2, K 1 (front border), put a marker on needle, P 2, K 2 in ribbing to end of row.

Row 2: P 2, K 2 in ribbing to marker, K the last 5 sts. 

Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 1 (1 ½) inches. 

Change to No. 3 needles and, keeping the 5 sts of front border in pattern as established, * work remaining sts in stockinette st for 2 inches.

K the next 4 rows (2 ridges).

Repeat from * once more. 

Work in stockinette st until piece measures 6 ½ (7) inches, ending on same Row as back at armhole.

SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 2(3) sts.

Dec 1 St at same edge every other row twice.

Working garter St stripes to correspond with back, work even on 31(34) sts until armhole measures 3(3 ½) inches.

SHAPE NECK: At front edge bind off 10 (13) sts.

At same edge dec 1 St every other row 3 times.

Keeping pattern, work even on 18 sts until armhole measures 3 ½ (4) inches.

SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 9 sts twice.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, being sure to reverse front border and shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures ¼ inch.

BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, bind off next 2 sts, work to end of row.

On the next row cast on 2 sts over those bound off previous row.

Work another buttonhole on last row of ribbing and work a buttonhole in same manner in each of the garter St stripes on front to neck.

 

SLEEVES: Using No. 1 needles, cast on 44(48) sts.

K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 1 inch.

Change to No. 3 needles and P 1 row, inc at even intervals to 50(56) sts.

Work even in stockinette St until piece measures 6 ½ (7 ½) inches.

SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3(4) sts.

Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row, working 3 ridges of garter St to match back and fronts, for 2 ¼ (2 ½) inches.

At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 3 sts.

Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR: Using No. 1 needles, cast on 80(84) sts.

Keeping 4 sts each end of needle in garter St, K 2, P 2 in ribbing for ½ inch.

Change to No. 3 needles and K the next row, inc 15 sts at even intervals.

Work even in garter St on 95(99) Sts until piece measures 1 ¼ inches.

Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves, matching garter St stripes.

Sew on collar.

Block to size. Make a button loop at top of neck. Sew on buttons.

 

BONNET 

Using No. 3 needles, cast on 168(184) sts.

Work in garter St for 6 rows (3 ridges).

Change to No. 1 needles and K 2 sts tog across row - 84(92) sts.

Work even in stockinette St for ½ inch.

Change to No. 3 needles and work even in stockinette St until piece measures l ½ (l ¼ ) inches above garter St ruffle.

Work 4 rows (2 ridges) in garter St.

Work in stockinette St until piece measures 3 ¼ (4) inches above garter St ruffle.

K the next row, inc 25 sts at even intervals.

K in garter St for 8 rows (4 ridges).

Bind off. 

BACK PIECE: Using No. 3 needles, cast on 22 sts.

Work even in stockinette St for 4 ½ (5) inches.

Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew back piece to cap at beg of back garter St band.

NECKBAND: With right side facing you and using No. 1 needles, pick up 80(88) sts across back of bonnet.

K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 1 inch.

Bind off.

Block to size.

Trim with ribbon.
